I always allow longer BUT - some sellers mark as dispatched a day or 2 before posting. If it does have a postmark - check it.

Now that ebay mark items as dispatched on screen and email the buyer - i think sellers should now only mark them as dispatched on the day they actually do it.

    I didn't know this

Agree with Techspec. The problem is sometimes that when Paypal postage is bought the dispatch icon lights up and the buyer is notified. However, the seller gains nothing from too much of a delay as Paypal postage incorporates a 'post-by' date.

Yeah, it used to be a good way for sellers to keep track. Pack the item - mark as dispatched - and then go on to the next.

But originally only the seller could see the item was marked as dispacthed. Now the buyer sees it and gets an email.

Therefore, its reasonable for them to assume its in the post system - and look out for it. If its still sat in someones house/ business, and isn't posted for a day or two - it can annoy the buyer. Some sellers do it on purpose - to look faster at dispaching - but its not a good idea - it just raises expectations.

As Crowqueen says, paying for postage via paypal can trigger the dispatch sign - but at least items have to be posted v quickly as they are time limited. Not sure how strict Royal Mail are with this though.
