Car insurance renewal but want a month gap...
Options
After a bit of advice:
Car insurance is due for renewal in sept 2012, main driver has two sets of points from 2007. For insurance purposes, this is the last year that they need to be declared.
One set of points expires in Oct 2012. There will be use of another car for the main driver as they are named on other cars insurance and main policy holder will be out of the country for 4 months.
My question is, can the original car be kept on the driveway and then new insurance bought from oct, therefore meaning only one set of points needs to be declared? If it is not driven from the expiration of the policy, then that should be ok? It has 7 years NCB, would this be lost?
Any help would be appreciated

You can do this. You won't lose any NCD
To stay legal you need to sorn the car once the present policy expires.0 -
Thanks
The car is taxed until the end of the year (by which point it will be insured again) - it would only be 26 days without insurance, so surely i would not need to declare it SORN? Can you do that for a month?
Looked at temp cover but its more expensive (£200+) and whilst there is another car to use during this 'gap', there doesnt seem to be any point.
Car insurance is such a joke, from what has been paid (and not claimed in last 7 years) couldve had a shiny new car! So anything to reduce the premium is being considered!Change is inevitable...nothing stays the same forever

As posted, if you want to be "legal" you have to SORN it.
It's your call.0 -
The law now requires a car to either be insured or declared as SORN. This is to cut down on the number of uninsured cars on the road. You will need to declare it as SORN and then un-SORN it when you want to start using it again.

Thanks guys, i didnt realise that you needed both if it was temporarily off the road. Ive also been informed that you can claim the road tax back for the period its declared SORN.

Also don't forget that SORN'ing it and leaving it on your drive is perfectly legal but if the car is vandalised, stolen or catches fire on your drive then you have no cover. If the car has any value then I wouldn't bother leaving it uninsured for a month just to save a hundred or so on premiums, not worth the risk.0

When you SORN a car you have to return the tax disc. You will get a refund for all the complete months remaining.0

As everyone has mentioned you should really Scorn the car but also remember that you will not be covered if anything happens to your car in the month it is not on cover.
Chances are that not would happen but you need to be aware. If it is a very expensive car you might want to get something like temp insurance. Some companies offer cover for limited periods of up to one month.
I do not know how cost effective it is but it might be worth looking at.
P.s I can not wait I have the last of my 3 points coming off in December. 35 in a 30 zone on the build up to a motorway and my god it makes a difference toy your insurance.Happiness, Health and Wealth in that order please!:A0
