Possible negative coming.....

Hi All,

sold something on ebay that ended Friday night (9pm) - the item is to be sent special delivery.

The buyer emailed me this morning asking why he hasnt received the item as it is next day special delivery and is

I had put the dispatch day as 2 workings days (which is actually tomorrow) which is clearly visible on the the listing. He seems very aggressive in his emails and i'm sure he's now going to neg me whatever I do :(

Any advice?

the crosser he seems the calmer you must be- seriously, soemtimes it works as they suddenly feel they are being daft.

explain that your despatch is 2 working days but you are actually sending it earlier than that as it will go today. The service you will be using is next day and the next day starts from the date of posting.

I've had this happen to me despite my listings being very clear, but buyer calmed down and I got glowing feedback once they understood that despatch has nothing to do with the service being offered. (my buyer bought at about 4pm one afternoon and assumed his item would arrive by 1am the next day)

  • thanks Soolin. I've kept calm so far and will continue to do so, I guess I shouldnt worry as there's nothing I can do now (as he already thinks it's late).

Could be my first neg in over 500 sales :(
  • If he does neg it's worth a call to CS if the tracking shows the item was delivered on or before the ETA on the "View Order Details" page (which should be Wednesday). Basically they are asking for something not advertised in the listing.

This is why I never advertise anything on eBay with Special Delivery, I just state Recorded and then send Special.

  • Simply point out your terms of sale. Tell the buyer that you put this on items because of the shift pattern you work.. he has no idea what job you do! Tell him youre a fireman or staff nurse at a hospital, should give the idiot off your case... ;)

No point with long excuses, an apology and politely pointing out the ETA on the order page is best.

Never over complicate things on ebay.

If the OPs terms were clear then they were clear and no amount of made up excuses will make any difference.

If only this person is making a mistake, then that's probably them. However, if more people have made it or may possibly make it, you may have to make it more clear. The disadvantage when trying to help here is that we can't see what you have written on your listing. Sometimes the problem with offering 'next day' services like Special Delivery is that buyers will think that means you will dispatch next day.

I think it's a little bit difficult when you use these services but don't dispatch within one day. However, the weekend means that you dispatched as soon as you could.

If there is any hint on your listing that your dispatch is slower than 'next day', make sure it is clear that although Special Delivery is being used your dispatch is 2 days. It's not always as obvious as you think it is.

Certainly do not lie to buyers. Stick to your guns - politely - but also make doubly sure that your listing does not advertise 'next day delivery' as that is what is most ambiguous about this particular situation.

  • If the OP only offered SD then right under the Buy It Now button it would say "Estimated Delivery: 3 Days".

By default if a seller offers special it shows clearly as express delivery as that is how ebay pick it up from Royal Mail. The despatch times are slightly more hidden, but the estimated delivery will show the next day delivery added to the despatch times, so in OPs case approx 4-5 days after payment.

Look at this random phone listing:

    http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Samsung-Galaxy-S-III-GT-I9300-S-3-UNLOCKED-/160873379458?pt=UK_Mobile_Phones&hash=item2574ccf682

special delivery gives the headline of 'express delivery' but estimated delivery times are clearly shown as longer.

Looking at that listing the ETA is incorrect, if the seller takes 3 days to ship how can delivery be 3-4 days? Don't know how eBay put that together but for SD the ETA should be 1 day plus the handling time giving the customer a specific day for delivery.
