Broadband limits

  • I had a look at samknows thanks (never heard of it before), and AOL, O2Be, C&W, SKY Easynet, TalkTalk, and Tiscali all are enabled. I am not very tech savvy so what does this mean, should i choose one of these?

Thanks for the TalkTalk advice, and I wont discount them (I probably should not believe everything I read online:-)).

I am having to change as I currently have orange free BB and I have read that they are getting rid of this add-on to mobile contracts so wanted a good service to change to so I don't have to change again. I have never gone over any limit that Orange may have (i am not even sure what package I am on other that it is good enough for what i use, and is free with no problems in the 5 or so years I have had it). But all good things must come to an end i suppose.

It means they will cost you less

LLU - Local Loop Unbundling - Not actually a type of technology, but rather describes the de-regulation of the former BT exchange network, meaning third-party access to copper wiring that connects the exchange to a broadband user's property.

    Copy and Paste

The two main advantages of LLU broadband are speed and price:
    • Speed - Because LLU providers use their own equipment, rather than re-selling BT's wholesale services, they are able to deliver faster broadband with additional features. But remember that advertised speeds will vary between providers, and it is unlikely you will ever really be getting the top headline speed. The actual speeds you receive depend on a range of factors, including your distance from the nearest exchange.
    • Price - LLU broadband providers also have more control over their costs. Because they are making an upfront investment, as well as using their own equipment and technology - rather than re-selling BT’s wholesale service - they have more flexibility on price offer better deals.
I think the surest sign that intelligent life exists elsewhere in the universe is that none of it has tried to contact us.

part of the problem is that people only complain when things go wrong...bearing in mind TT do have a lot of customers (and not all of them are the most intelligent, IYSWIM)
    Talking about me again GJ
then the complaints as a % of customers probably isn't that big.[
    Now now
OK, more than some, but they've got a bigger customer base than most.

I for one am with TT since the Tiscali takeover, and have to say I'm on the full LLU service, which is actually pretty good. Even on the TT forums, most of the issues seem to be from people on an IPStream connection, which neither TT or any other IPStream ISP have that much of an influence over as they are all reliant on BT. So, if you have an LLU option, they are usually the better bet :)
Second the last bit, about 2 years ago I would have said do not touch TT, then 1 year ago I tried them because I was not tied in for more than 30 days, to test the water (previously with Plusnet, but they could not offer me more than 5Mbps). Needless to say I haven't seen the need to go back.
Notwithstanding that they have screwed up my half price deal, (got 3 months free because of that) and they sent a "bright spark" round to find out why I still couldn't get more than 5Mbps. Now I am getting 13.7-14 which is all I could expect from my line SNR and sync of 16.3 .

You could always stay with orange, it's going to be cheaper than bt

BT's Download limits are best avoided.

    In a word, yes.

TT, AOL and Tiscali (now defunct) are all TT, they bought up the other 2.

TT and sky are similarly priced (as I've just been comparing to see if sky would have been any cheaper for me over my current TT service) both around £30 a month for line rental, anytime calls and unlimited bb.

O2/Be are a bit more expensive

Orange are only a BT reseller now, so service won't be as good as a LLU service. (and I just checked and they recon I can get their service at 2 Meg lol, I sync at 7.2 meg on LLU :)

well for price vs what you get Sky are usually one of the better ones - but this of course depends on their phone line and calls package and if this is suitable as you have to take on their phone rental and calls

otherwise i can say with all certainty that when Sky say unlimited broadband they really do mean it as i have yet to have any problems with them and i know i am probably at the top end of the usage scales (anywhere from 300gb a month plus, and some months 700gb plus) due to having many devices, and lots of streaming from lovefilm netflix and all the other catch up programs (for 5 of us)
    Drop a brand challenge
on a £100 shop you might on average get 70 items save
    10p per product = £7 a week ~ £28 a month
    20p per product = £14 a week ~ £56 a month
30p per product = £21 a week ~ £84 a month (or in other words one weeks shoping at the new price)
  • All TT packages now include unlimited downloads.

If you pay the 3.25 for 12 months, and pay for the line rental 12 months up front (at 9.50 p/m) then it's a great deal for less than £13... but you do run the risk of problems. If you have no problem then you'll have no problems!

The only bad thing I can say about them is that it took an age to get everything connected and running (partly BTOR though), and they randomly call me to sell me stuff I already have (even though my account preferences are for them not to sales call me!).

You pays yer money you takes yer choice.

subject to a Fair usage policy and traffic management, which isnt really unlimited since they do actually limit you in the above ways,

sorry this is a pet hate, but is true, how can a package be advertised as unlimited when there is some sort of limit imposed on you beyond the physical limitations of your line and hardware, yes the fair usage policy might be generous, but its still limited and is not suitable to someone like me who goes over 300gb every month

  • I will install the meter and have a look, but will it also give me a record of anything that i dont do on my laptop, like xbox online gaming, and iplayer watches?

No, a software meter will only try to track usage on the machine that it is installed on (ie your laptop). Any usage outside of that, such as XBox or smartphones with WiFi, won't be tracked. Also keep in mind, the meter should only be used for a general idea of usage, there's no guarantee that it will track 100% all broadband usage on your laptop.

    Hi AlinWales,

If you are reiceveing marketing calls but opted out of marketing from TT this needs to be investigated.

If you tweet us @TalkTalkCare or join the TalkTalk Members Forum we can investigate into this for you.

@All - In regards to usage from gaming there is very little information regarding this. As such around 12 months ago we conducted some tests with our customers via the TalkTalk Members forum, whereby we isolated gameplay and tracked the usage. From my recollection 1 hour of gamplay averaged between 40-50mb of usage. This will be subject to fluctuation depending on a number of factors such as the number of real players/bots, how graphic intensive the game is, what info is needed by the game servers etc.

Provided MSE do not deem fit to remove this link you can see the specific games and consoles tested here

*Please note this post is in now way intended to influence the OP's decision, but to provide assistance to an existing customer and generic advice re gaming usage based on our testing.
