How long should a pair of shoes last?

Just wondering if you think I might be able to get a replacement or refund on the "not fit for purpose" part of the retail law.
I bought a pair of shoes from Asda 10 days ago,ballet pumps with a small flat heel,they cost £10.So I knew they wouldn't be very hard wearing,have had ballet flats before for work and I expected them to last maybe 3 months.
I have been wearing them to work,in a retail shop,for 8 days and they are ready for the bin,the top is still fine but the sole was so soft that tiny bits of gravel from outdoors was justy becoming embedded.Already the sole is worn away and the entire sole on one shoe is hanging off.I nearly fell up the stairs in the shop yesterday because of it!
Could I take these back?Personally I think they should have lasted much longer and the sole was made of a very soft material making them not fit for purpose.

Oh just to add,I bought cheap shoes because its all the money I had.I bought them for an interview and got the job.I don't get paid till end of week 2 and shoes only lasted 1 week of work!

Do you still have the receipt? Take them back to Asda and they'll probably refund. They do offer a 100 day satisfaction guarantee, so after 10 days I'm almost certain they'll at least offer a refund to store credit with no argument at all.

I'd expect £5 ballet pumps to last 2 years if worn most days. £10 ones I'd want for 5+ years.....

Maybe for an office job - for my retail job where I was on my feet all day every day, I was lucky to get 2 months for a £5 pair of ballet shoes, and I think that was reasonable. Why would anyone spend money on a pair of £50 well made leather shoes if £5 Primani shoes would do the job?!

I don't imagine they're actual shoes for ballet - ballet shoes are now a name for a style of shoe. Google images ballet pumps!

Maybe because the £50 ones will probably last you for a few years ? If you're looking to save money, buying the £50 ones are most cost effective if you can afford them.

You get what you pay for.

My OH buys her work shoes from Asda Living, last about 4-6 weeks (restaurant).. we consider this reasonable for the price

That's what I was getting at Arcon - the poster before said they expected £10 to last 5+ years... My point was that if they lasted that long no one would buy more expensive shoes!

I've given up on the shoes from Asda, I was getting through a pair a week working in retail, some I got exchanged but the replacements never lasted any longer. I did try a few different shoes and styles and some lasted slightly longer than others.

I finally got a refund instead of a replacement and bought a £12 pair from Tesco, I'm now in month two and the shoes are still as good as when I bought them, if they broke now I'd be more than happy to buy another pair.
