Guidelines on when to use Recorded delivery?

  • Thanks for all the replies. I appreciate the input and i think i might ditch recorded. I didn't realise you could get proof of postage without sending recorded.

Soolin - It wasn't a typo. If i just want to get rid of something that is in good working order i list at 10p plus postage (which includes fees). I really can't abide throwing things away unless there is something wrong with it. And i've been mucked about with freecycle sites before.

JennyJJ - I never really considered the fact that it makes it harder for the recipient to get the item but it's a very good point!

    Thanks again everyone

    Yes we agree.
One added glimmer of value with RD is that it might be enough to stop paypal snatching your money back if some lying buyer claims non-delivery. But admittedly I've never had that issue to resolve for valuable items.
    POP or courier.

PayPal *only* take proof of delivery for An INR claim and all recorded does is *prove* to PayPal that it has been lost (assuming you get the usual in transit message of course)

The is also another issue with recorded that is anecdotal though. RM know they don't always get a signature but know most get delivered, so there is more chance of having a claim refused with recorded as it is with normal post. There have been a few mentions on both eBay and Amazon seller boards of claims being refused with an Apology that whilst item has been delivered no signature was obtained , and they refund the recorded element of the postage only

  • ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS, for me. I have had people scam me over £1.99 items, all because I risked it and just posted standard.

Recorded adds 75p to the total cost of postage I think. I dont risk it. Its a personal choice, but there are people out there just waiting to try and scam you, they are the kind who will leave negative feedback in spite too and if you want to become top rated for example, you are "allowed" 2 negative feedbacks per 100 to get the 98% minimum required. Is the 75p extra not worth it??? I suppose it depends on what you are selling as people can leave negative feedback no matter what anyway I guess.

    Xmas Saver!
I think recorded is now 95p extra, for me personally if the item is £10 or over I send recorded delievery, even thou it goes down the same channels as standard post,
But I just sold 2 x ds consules, I started sale at £20, but because there an item that could easily be recieved and the charge back or go missing, I specified special delievery, - one was £6.50, other £8, 9they had different cases, so whether it was weight).

The general rule for standard posting was 100 x 1st class stamps, with exceptions such as money, coupons, jewellery etc.

Recorded delivery is 'signed for' and it is 95p, has been for 5 months.

As a seller I do love my competitors using recorded and being 95p more expensive than me, it does my sales a greal deal of good.

Frankly though, if I was being scammed so often on £1.75 items that it paid me to spend 95p a go I would give up online selling.

100 packets a month would be an extra £95- I would much rather have that than waste my money on a service that im some areas is useless. Still, I suppsoe I ought to be jealous that someone can afford to throw away £95!

Just a word of warning as it has affected at least 2 people on here already. Adding recorded to your very low cost items seems to annoy buyers and they may well mark you down in your stars, or even reflect the expensive postage in your feedback.

You mention negs and TRs etc, I am a TRS and on average ship 80 items a month through that account and have no low stars for p and p at all and my losses are currently running at about 1 in 500 items.

    EDIT: It is also worth looking at this thread if you think recorded stops a seller having problems;

Not any more. When stamps were 46p this was true but now a first class stamp is 60p the compensation limit has stayed at £46.
