How have your crops been this year?
My second early potatoes in planter bags on the patio did very well. The main crop in the exposed garden higher up - not so good.
The tomatoes (on planters) look like being a failure - too much rain, not enough sun I think.
The plum tree has some sort of blight and I am having to buy in plums to make even a fraction of my usual plum brandy
.
The runner beans in a very large planter with a wigwam have been spectacular. I'll swear there is a runner bean fairy who replaces picked beans when my back is turned
That said I have a smaller wigwam in a different position and it is a lot less impressive. A case of location location location methinks
.
Herbs have been OK apart from the French Tarragon which has hardly grown.
Finally the red chilli plants produced quite a lot - a surprise given the weather.

My first year of growing -
Tomatoes have largely been a failure they were doing so well then started dying not sure why but think it was blight or the bad weather. I have some green ones but they don't seem to be turning red.
Cucumbers - Going wild, have quite a few promising looking ones.
Peppers - a few starting to come but again the plants look quite poor but I think it is due to the weather.
Carrots - first crop took a while to get started but planted another crop in July and they are shooting up.
Strawberries - small first crop but plenty of runners.
Lettuce - first 2 did well but then others seemed to give up due to weather.0 -
Tomatoes very good
Cucumbers very good
runner beans too good . giving masses away
Raspberries are now starting looking good
Thats the end of the good news,
Strawberries very poor
Lettuce good to start with , but the slugs are eating more than us
Courgettes, lots of leaves and flowers but poor harvest
Apple trees , nothing on the Russet
Cox have fruit , but I inspected one , not looking to good.
Rhubarb , poor0 -
Generally quite poor.
Early potatoes did ok, second lot in got blight.
Mangetout - first lot so-so, second lot eaten by slugs. Or something.
Carrots ok, some bolted but the second lot seem to be doing better.
Courgettes rubbish to start with but having a final spurt/mini glut now.
Tomotoes still green, peppers and sweetcorn late flowering so probably too late now to do anything, strawberries poor, spring onions dug up by the cats, salad leaves slugged.
Overall, I'm wondering why I bothered. All shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well.
Pedant alert - it's could have, not could of.0 -
First year growing my own, so I can't tell what's good/bad compared to "normal".
- Tomatoes - 2 bush plants doing well, loads of fruit, just started to ripen this week.
- Cucumber - 1 plant died halfway, weather probably. The other has done ok, producing 4 fair sized cukes.
- Runner Beans - 6 plants up a wigwam in a big pot have done very well, we've eaten loads and they are still flowering/producing.
- Swede - Dismal, a combination of weather, me not knowing what's best for it, and worst of all, slugs.
- Lettuce - Grew well but the slugs/snails have eaten/demolished more than we have.
- Carrots - First sowing in pots did quite well, but later sowing in the ground have been fantastic.
- Parnsips - Still in the ground, approx. half germinated and grew on well. Hard for me to tell, but I think they're doing ok underground, foliage is thickening nicely.
- Red Onions - Sets put in late but most grew on nicely. Nothing huge, but have been interesting to watch.
- Spring Onions - Took what seemed like AGES to get going, but have harvested a handful of good sized bulbs, though mostly quite thin "stems".
- Strawberries - 6 plants in a large tub didn't produce as much as we expected. Picked maybe half a punnet? Rest either eaten by something, or rotted on the plants.
- Sweet Peppers - 3 plants, 2 of which have 3 peppers each, growing well but not sure if they'll get much bigger or ripen before it's too late (currently a bit larger than the average jalapeno).
- Beetroot - Foliage grew great guns but beets themselves didn't. Round variety did better than long variety, which hardly grew at all below the surface. All got a bit munched by something too.
Happy overall, it's been good fun and learned a lot. Hopefully next year will be better, and I'll be able to tweak a few things.0 -
It seems that runner beans have been good generally. They must like it cold and damp

Potatoes were awful...........not many at all:(
Courgettes -had a few the the slugs took hold:mad:
Sprouting broccoli - was doing well then slugs found it:mad:

Sweetcorn.............slow but getting there (OH planted it a bit late:)
Carrots -hardly dare mention -I've got bigger darning needles............lol:(
Chiilis and peppers -so far so good:)
Melons - feeling hopeful
Runner beans - fantastic :T

Been a bit hit and miss as its the first time we've used this piece of land (used to be an old shed ) -here's hoping for better next year:)I would be unstoppable if only I could get started !

If its your first year don't worry about the strawberries, the plants come good in their 2nd and 3rd years then decline in the 4th, thats the time to get rid.
Peg down a few of the runners, so that you'll get plants for free.
My tomatoes have done very well, being in Scotland I tend to only grow them in a greenhouse, which has a sheet of plastic up and the door left shut till mid morning. In fact on some days it doesn't get opened at all...
The brassicas are going really well, the Calabrese is in the freezer. I grow all mine in a cage to prevent the caterpillars getting at em. Plenty of Kale, sprouts and savoys to look forward to.
I use beer traps laden with Tesco £1 for 4 lager to control slugs, they love it more so than the veg! When I am flush I'll use nematodes as well, which are the dog's danglies.
My carrots have been absymal though, hardly any from 2 whole packets.
The peas have been brill, the grandkids scoff the lot so none have ever made it into the kitchen, but who cares.
Cucumbers did well, though I'm now sick of eating them.
Parsnips look good, just awaiting a hard frost, which won't be long up here.
Swede growing well, tried growing them in 4" pots and then transplanting, looks to have been a success.
Turnips. spring cabbage and greens just starting to go in the ground now the onions, peas and garlic has been cleared.0 -
The kids have done quite well this year as last year we lost all the tomatoes to blight
Tomatoes are going well and are lovely
Carrots - complete disaster. Heavy clay soil
Spring onions not great either
Runner beans - fabulous. Lots for everyone at Sunday dinners (slugs got my first batch even after slug pellets and double sided tape was used around the containers)
Leeks.........well, lets say no more
Life is a rollercoaster.....ya just gotta ride it:whistle:0 -
Spuds - earlies were ok but later ones not good
Strawberries - went to mush in the rain
Onions and shallots - not a bad yield
Lettuce - slugs got most of them but what we got were ok
Cucumbers - loads!!
Courgettes very poor
Caulies and brocolli - 2 of each out of a dozen each planted
Beetroot - lots of leaves but roots have been small
Green beans and peas were ok but broad beans failed miserably *sob*
Aubergines - Fantastic!!! 24 aubergines off 2 plants in the poly tunnel:j
Plum tree in first year of fruiting.........1 plum :rotfl:
We've had our allotment for 8 years and this is the first time we've had a bad year so I can't really complain0 -
I've only grown toms this year....lost most of first crop to the wind and bad weather so had to beg a few additional plants off freegle...they are only just flowering so I'm really not hopeful - might see what I can pick up in the sales to try and grow a few more things next year, no greenhouse unfortunately.
Huge rosemary bush still going great guns, and mint doing it's usual own thing. Fennel plant did well again, although grew bent this yer from the strong winds.Feb 2015 NSD Challenge 8/12JAN NSD 11/16
