failure to display tax disk while abroad

  • Why not just tell the local police? That way you have a record of trying to sort it.

    Hello,
I am wondering if you'd have some advice for me. I received my road tax reminder on the very last day before the expiry (31 August). Ok, fair enough, I should have remembered myself, but I didn't. My bad. I immediately renewed online, but I am not going to be home to place the new disk on my car. I know that if I renew online I have 5 working days after expiry to display it, but I'll be back 15 days after expiry! Do you think displaying the Confirmation of Tax Disc Application next to the old disk + a note saying I am abroad would be enough to avoid a fine? What else can I do?
    Thanks

    Philippe

not exactly the same but couple years ago i renew my disc online and it failed to arrive. as i was going on a trhee week exercise i phoned the DVLA to explain the situation. As they could see on the system that i had paid in full they made a note on their system. all was fine.
The word about the scammers is spreading like marmite here in the westcountry.
We workers all love it and the ppc hate it :rotfl:

That is all well and good but if the vehicle is on a public road there is still the separate offence of failing to DISPLAY a disc which is not connected with DVLA records.

    Hello,
I thought I would update my post in case anyone else is having the same problem. I talked to the parking attendant (who says it's nothing to do with him), to the DVLA (who says there's nothing they can do) and to the police (who says that displaying the proof of payment is not enough).
The DVLA has been fairly unhelpful, and basically they said "too bad, you'll have to pay for the fine!". Until I myself asked what would happen if I was to buy a second road tax disk at the post office. They say it's perfectly fine and I would have no problem to get a refund when I get back! So, I'm off to the post office...

You'll only get a refund for the unexpired portion though so if it is the end of the month when you get back you'll have to get it in the post super quick!

What if there was no such thing as a rhetorical question?

ah ok. Good to know (of course they haven't told me at the DVLA). Back on the 17th, so, still much better than a £200 fine...

No worries. Cost will depend on the car of course. If the tax for the year is only £100 then not too bad. If it's in the £400 bracket it'll be pricey.

It's only the unused months you get back so you'll essentially have paid twice for September.

You'll have to be careful when you try to get a refund.

Normally the dvla can only mange if a vehicle is taxed, or sorned. (or untaxed)
As you will have paid out for two lots of tax, you need to ensure they don't simply sorn the vehicle, and refund just one payment, and wipe the other out.

You need to make it very clear to them you have taxed the vehicle twice, for the same period, and want a full refund for one, and to leave the other running.

(tbh, I'd double check that, as I've never heard of their system managing to do it before, as it should show you are taxed online, when you try to buy it at the PO)

Mind you, if you taxed it Friday, it should be here anytime now.

I'm back from the post office and it didn't work with the V11 reminder, but was accepted using the V5C registration certificate.
Yes it should be here, but this time I am going away so today was the last chance... Thanks for the additional advice.

Out of interest, does anyone know what would happen if you just bought a huge tarpaulin and wrapped your car up in that?
