I took my car to a friend a few weeks back and he said my car needed all new tyres, brake disc front and rear and wishbone basically loads done and quoted me 540 just to start. Now fast froward yesterday took car to MOT apart from two front tires that needed changing it passed! One rear tyre is close to expiring though.. Basically my friend wants car in at 10 an quite frankly I know brakes need doing but this month I got no money but need car for 4 days a week plus 3 day week this month for 23 mile motorway driving do you think I can leave the car for another month since I paid tax disc too yesterday? I can't believe it practically passed MOT because car was ok
In the end and he said it needed lots of work done. He said he wasn't ripping me off and I know brakes need doing but they are not that bad or surely MOT would have picked it up? Am I being to part with 540? Because am a woman?

you said the car is with a friend. surly you trust them. don't ever risk dodgy brakes and tyres.

was there no advisories on the MOT?

since its with a friend maybe you could offer to pay parts now, and labour later?

Not if the brakes are working efficiently, which they can do right down to the lass mm of wear.

Just get some new tyres and if money is as tight as you say you might just need to put some ling long ditch finders on it. If you don't your car is at present unroadworthy even if the old MOT has some time to run.

The brakes will possibly be OK for a little while longer.
  • A friend told you he wasn't ripping you off?

Can't imagine such a conversation between true friends, loyalty and trust is or should be a given.

The car passed the MOT, that means the wishbone isn't in a dangerous state or the MOT tester wouldn't have passed it, unless your friend took the car for MOT and has an 'understanding' with the tester.

It twer me and the test wasn't compromised in any way, i'd pass on this mornings appointment and instead find a recommended indy...not a fast fit joint...and get them to have a look see what needs doing, and get them to quote you.

If brakes need attention, which is possible but the no advisories MOT pass gives me doubts, then they need doing immediately.

Actually rereading your OP, did it get a full MOT test, did it pass, or has the tester advised tyres before testing?

I got the tyres done yesterday just one close to legal limit which I will leave until the end of the month. So tyres all done, got them done after MOT took them back and he checked and passed MOT.

Ok i will re phrase that two tyres failed before he could pass it he to change two front tyres. That was all that failed. The rear tyre Is close to expiring but passed.

OK, so it passed and we assume the MOT tester was competent.

That tells me the wishbone is fine, at least for the forseeable future, it also tells me that the brakes, whilst possibly needing new friction parts in a while are working to a good standard.

I would be getting someone else to give me their opinion on the work needing to be done.

edit...did i read correctly that the tyres were changed by the MOT centre...in that case i'm absolutely certain that the tester would have had a poke nose at the pads whilst the wheels were off.

No it was tyre place over the road. I told him I am giving it a miss this morning and getting second quote for brakes Monday.

He is a school guy not someone I know really really well and for all I know he might just want some of that money but 540 is a lot for me to part with.

I can wait until end of month or see what Monday garage say. They done my friend brake for £45 do not know what exactly but she has a nice Alpha Romeo I have a peugeot.
