Wouldn't it be better to do something about it BEFOREhand? I am 100% against using a mobile phone whilst driving - but I have never thought punishing those who have actually killed someone rather than those who have yet to do so is a sensible or reasonable way of going about things. However, I also am very wary of the police; they are more interested in crime and traffic statistics than actual road safety.

So long as you also do something about the lippy, sandwiches, kids, missuses and shavers as well.......fine. Then, lets ban car radios, CDs, Satnavs and people singing or talking as well, cos theyre also distracting. Think of all those statistics the police could point to about number of arrests and convictions.

But no, lets pick on mobile phone users. But wierdly, not those who use a hands free. How random is that?

Whilst other things may be distracting, holding and talking on a mobile phone is far more distracting than the things you have listed. Satnavs can also be a useful aid where the driver can actually concentrate on the road and knows whilst being safely directed to where they are going. Having spent several months recently trying to find unknown places in the dark from maps and prepared pieces of paper I think they are actually a much safer opiton; one hand on a phone concentrating on an unrelated conversation is hardly the same. Few people bothered to indicate when they had both hands free and since most are terrible drivers to start with cutting their upper body capacity by 50% (hands) and their brain capacity (often limited anyway) by at least a much is in a totally different league. Maybe if they also watched tv that would be the same level as holding a conversation with a passenger in your view?
