We've had a couple on Rosie this year and she's only got very short bristly hair bloody horrible aren't they?
I asked our vet as we use Advocate and apparently it doesn't cover for ticks so she suggested those seresto collars to us too and yep they are really pricey  Got me thinking tho...I wonder if just a plain ole flea collar would do the job as thats all the posh ones are really aren't they??

Thanks - but as per my original post...I am not asking about tick removers, I am looking for something to PREVENT those little !!!!!!s attaching themselves to cats/dog....
  • you cant "prevent" a pest from attaching, even if one claimed it would if pest decides it having some it will go get some i'm affraid. just like flea's, there no affective prevntative from the flease to crawl onto the animal, only that when it does get there, its killed by the way of treatment such as flea treatment but even that doesnt stop them having a bite or two before they die off..

never ever TWIST a tick free, it will either detach it from its body and the head may burrow in causing a boil type infection requireing lancing, draining, cleaning packing and numerous amount of anti inflamitories and antibiotics.

    atrixblue - great video

I am terrified to always hear people believe they shoud twist a tick or cover in vaseline etc.

Nothing worse than twisting a tick or putting any grease on it.

The MUST be pulled out straight without any twisting.

I know that, always knew that.

Still.. want something to kill them on contact - if not prevent them coming on to an animal.

May ask friends to post me tick spot on from Poland, they have it there. I can not believe I can not find anything for ticks only here.

Sorry GR, but I can't read all of this thread.

Sometimes there is no MSE way when it comes to animals, as you know with your trip to Mr Fitzpatrick

Get the POM spot on medications from your vet. Gently unscrew the ticks as adv by Waterfalls, or else they will panic and regurgitate.

Above all, and I really mean ABOVE ALL , DO NOT EVER TRUST INTERNET FORUM ADVICE - speak to your vet and vet nurse... I say I am a VN, snowman says he's a vet - there is no way of checking anyone via their forum username!

Ring your local vet - discuss the local risk and available treatments with the vet. Find the money as we always have to, to pay for what they advise, and then treat as required.

    Sorry to be so blunt
I don't know half of you half as well as I should like, and I like less than half of you half as well as you deserve.

Thanks but I know for sure that ticks should only ever be pulled out straight without any twisting....

And I really can not believe why so many people claim otherwise....

    Thanks anyway

Do not twist or jerk the tick as this may leave the mouth parts embedded, or cause the tick to regurgitate infective fluids.

UNLESS using the tick removal twister tool:

I pull them little !!!!!!s with my nails so pull them out straight

I have the twister "tool" but never worked for me, prefer using my own nails and pulling the bas...s out this way grrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

My beautiful Scruff Cat had a tick several years ago, and web browsing suggested various essential oils to kill the blighter before removal. I tried Sandalwood, he didn't mind. It didn't work, it didn't suffocate, and I got it out with tweezers still kicking.

My darling boy smelt gorgeous for ages afterwards, and after he was killed by some careless speeding so and so, every time I smelt sandalwood, it evoked memoried of him.... Darling Scruff, I still miss you.

Anyhoo, sorry, got sidetracked, though essential oils don't do the job of removal, I wonder if they can be used as a deterrent? Using the right one obviously, as previously stated, some are toxic.
I ave a dodgy H, so sometimes I will sound dead common, on occasion dead stupid and rarely, pig ignorant. Sometimes I may be these things, but I will always blame it on my dodgy H.

Sorry, I'm a bit of a grumble weed today, no offence intended ... well it might be, but I'll be sorry.
