Acer Laptop Repair Help!!!

Hi,
I'm looking for a bit advice on if I should get my laptop repaired or not.

I have an Acer Aspire 3680 and the pin in the jack point for the power supply has broke, so I can't charge the battery and now as the battery is low I can't use the laptop at all.

I got a quote from a local computer shop of £80 to repair but they said it might be more/less depending on what needs to be done. Is this reasonable?

To be honest it is an old laptop but serves it purpose for what I need it for but I am not sure I want to pay that much to repair it. Is it difficult to repair or is there anything I can do to repair it myself? Would like to even get some power to it so I can get my photos and documents from it and I will get another 2nd hand laptop if repairing is too difficult!

Any advice would be appreciated as I don't want to waste money I don't have.

Thanks,
Laura

You could take the hard drive out and put it in a caddy, so you have an external hard drive with all your stuff on, you could use it, or something similar to regularly back up your important documents.

What's the budget to replace and what do you use your notebook for as it is probably not worth spending £80 on a notebook of that age.

    Hi,
I thought about spending about £40 to get it fixed. As you say nearlyrich it is an old laptop so not worth spending a lot of money on it. I really just use it for going on net and putting photos on and creating listings for selling on Ebay.

I am not sure of doing anything myself to fix it, I did see you can get a new jack point for a few pounds, but as for opening the laptop up and doing the work I am out of my comfort zone there.

Was in the same situation myself.
So if you have decided not to get it repaired and have written it off.......have a go yourself.
Have a look on the net for take apart instructions and vids.
Buy the jack, got mine from ebay.
Fire up the old soldering iron and have a go, mine was just two tabs to desolder on the bottom of the mobo, soldered in the replacement and all was good.
As I said if you have given up on it you have nothing to lose by having a go.

Thanks for the advice , I think I may just have a go of fixing it as you say I have nothing to lose.
I will ask my OH if he can borrow a soldering iron from somewhere and I'll research the net for repair advice and get the part bought on Ebay.

It can't be any worse than when my OH found me with my head in the back of the washing machine repairing that. I do tend to have a go at repairing anything, I was just a bit scared with a laptop

I think some repair shops are dreaming when they ask £70-80 for a power jack replacement....most I've ever asked is £45 when the lappy was a pig to strip and rebuild :)
