I'm a landlord who specifically put in the contract with my tenants that they were allowed pets as long as they paid for any damage they caused. My tenants currently have dogs, rabbits and chickens!

They do exist, it's just that it's always best to ask before renting a place whether it is acceptable to have pets and, if so, what sort of pets and on what terms.

Believe it or not, i'm a landlord too (i know, don't ask) and my contracts say you have to get written permission that won't unreasonable be refused. I look at it on a case by case basis, although tenants don't always ask permission.

Things is i've lived in this property for 18 months and I wasn't even considering getting a dog when we moved in (hubby didn't like dogs - or children it seems), but I agree with what you say about asking before renting generally.

I live in rented and I have pets. I have cats and until recently had a dog. I have lived in 3 different houses in the last ten years and not had too much problem finding landlords that were ok with animals.

When me and OH viewed the house we are in now, the landlord said he did not really want someone with pets but was happy to take someone with young children. We said our animals were better behaved than a lot of children and would not be breaking things or drawing on the walls (2 of the bedrooms had scribbles all over the walls!). Also we said if any of our animals did do any damage we would pay for it. He agreed for us to rent but on a temporary basis. Over 7 years later he is quite happy with us - might be something to do with the fact that we have completely redecorated the whole house, put in a new bathroom suite and recarpeted the living room, stairs, landing and bedrooms! I should add that we didn't do any of them because of anything our animals did but because we want to live in a nice house
