recommendations for alternatives to living in Brighton please?

Hello

We currently live in Hove and previously lived in Brighton. We are finding that its just too expensive to rent in Brighton and Hove anymore and we are looking for somewhere to move to thats still in Sussex or Surrey.
We want to live somewhere that has several restaurants, pubs and shops as we have pretty much always lived in cities or large towns and I was wondering if anyone had any recommendations for other towns or cities in Sussex or Surrey that are nice to live in?
The only place we dont want to move to is Worthing as my husband grew up there and doesnt have very good memories of Worthing :(

Has anyone got any suggestions or recommendations?
Sorry my post is so long... thank you for reading :)

xx

Depends if you want to stay by the sea or move inland a bit. Surrey is a long way inland and has some very nice towns but has a much faster pace of life than maybe brighton/hove. It's also expensive, probably more so than Brighton in most areas, the areas you would want to live in. Don't know much about Sussex but I assume it'll be similar prices to Surrey if moving to a large town.

I live in Surrey, near to Weybridge, and when I was renting a few years back it was around £900 a month for a 1 bedroom flat. I believe prices have risen slightly since then.

I think Hastings has a lot to offer.

Yes some parts are tired but you get that in all locations.

The housing costs are very cheap and there is the lovely old town and new town parts.

the park is lovely too as is the beach and you get a mix of people.

So for cheapness and character I'd go for Hastings.

I live in Horsham, about 30 minutes drive north of you. Pretty, flourishing town with a nice sense of community. Good transport links and easy to get to lovely countryside. Restaurants and pubs a-plenty, both in the town & the outlying villages. Easily commutable to Worthing/hove/brighton if your jobs are still there

As a result, It's expensive to live here! Not sure how it compares to where you are now, but thought I'd suggest it as I have loved the place since I moved here in 2005

Haywards Heath (I'm sure I've heard it's nice, but dunno a lot about it other than my cousin used to live there and my friend goes there occasionally!).

    Lewes?

Would you consider as far up as Tunbridge Wells/Tonbridge?

  • I was going to suggest Horsham. It would help if we knew where you needed to travel to and what your budget is.
