Energy Prices - Comparisons

About 12 months ago I started refurbishing a house with a view to moving into it when it was complete.
I left the gas and electricity with the existing supplier and tariff (BG - Standard), as the useage would not be much. Now that I am close to moving in I decided to see who/what the best energy supplier might be for the future.

For comparison purposes I assumed a yearly consumption of 4,000 kWh for electricity and 20,000 kWh for gas. The results were interesting !!!!

Firstly, a comparison site told me that I would save £110 by changing everything to BG Click 2 tariff.

However, when I sat down and worked my way through all the numbers, I arrived at the following annual energy bill:-

Click 2: £888.83
Standard: £887.68

My best option appears to be Standard Tariff for gas and Click 2 for electricity, giving me an annual bill of £806.15.

I was already aware from posts on MSE that the comparison sites were not very accurate ! The suppliers don't appear to help either; the BG web-site lists over a dozen different tariffs - I couldn't find the "standard" one anywhere, I had to 'phone up and ask for that one !

Because there are other savings to be made on payment methods, I haven't finally decided which to go for. AND, of course this was a price comparison within ONE supplier ! OOOHHHH my brain hurts !!!

(PS: I'm on oil at the moment - that's easy !)

The national averages are a load of bull. I am home all day, solid brick 3 bed semi yet use half that you mention.
Any spare money, Moon, should go to insulation.

I don't dispute that, I just used those figures as a yardstick, I was just trying to compare like with like.

Lots more loft insulation is on the list !

Sorry, Moon, didn't mean to be abrupt.
Low users ,tho, seem to benefit from going to certain providers.

Agree, especially on electricity, there does seem to be a large variation in charges for the first 900 kWh, around 100% !

Sorry moonrakerz but you can't have worked it out properly if you think you would be better off on the standard tarrif for gas than click 2.

    Standard: 4.398p/2.240p
    Click 2: 4.139p/2.105p

Both tiers are clearly cheaper on click 2, albeit only by a small amount. I think you may need to go through your figures again.

    Interesting !

One would think that would be the case, but it isn't. That was why I phoned BG to get a 'standard' price. Not only is the figure I quoted the one given to me over the phone, but it is the figure shown on a bill I received a couple of days later.
Where did you get your figures from for the standard rate ? They are not the pre-price reduction figures are they ?

If nothing else, I think this shows how b****y difficult it is to understand energy prices at the moment !

If your consumption is low enough, Moon, go for EBICO.
Simple bills, nothing added, nothing taken away. Can pay quarterly.

Until I move I don't know what my consumption will be - I might stay with BG for a few months then have another look when I have an idea of my consumption.

I must confess that I do like to pay quarterly - you only have to look at some of the threads on this site to see what a financial mess the companies can get you in with their monthly direct debits.

The standard rate is off their website, and is correct. :)
