Would a dash-cam help?

I was hit head on today on a bend down a single track lane, with no witnesses. The young woman driver (4months driving) apologised profusely and signed a statement that said I had stopped and she had driven into me. On the phone to her mother whilst taking details, her mother said it would probably be knock for knock which was ok for her as the edge of her bumper was barely scratched, mine needs renewing and the car also needs new grille.
I rang my insurance claimline later and then they rang her. Her story had changed by this time and she denied all responsibility saying I could have been moving. I was advised that the statement I took would not stand up in court and as there were no witnesses I would have to get my insurance to fix it. So it would be 'knock for knock'. Of course my excess would have to help pay for this meanwhile she gets off free.
My question is if I had a dash-cam on board recording the fact that I had stopped and her coming straight for me for about 3 seconds would this have helped my claim?

  • it probably would have, she drove into you and that on cam as proof is irrefutable.

there are a veriety of different type of dash cam systems out there now. ive seen some that look like a mini HD cam that has a suction cup to hold it on the windscreen and placed next to rear view mirro and ive seen other that are like car remote key fobs.

If you have a smartphone, Android, Iphone etc. you can get apps that record your journey.

All you need then is a screen mount for the phone.

Be careful of that one, they say they are in Wales but if you click on their contact details, you'll discover they're actually in the kingdom of far far away. They haven't started off well by attempting to mislead prospective customers about their location.

I was scammed by a China based eBay seller who sent a fake dash-cam. I was told by eBay that I would have to send the fake item back to China if I wanted a refund, despite the listing expressly stating that they were "UK based." I got a refund from the credit card company in the end but it was several months of hassle.

My suggestion is to look at Techmoan's reviews on YouTube and buy from either a reputable UK retailer or an eBay seller that has a genuine address in the UK (not some warehouse) so you have a way to enforce your statutory rights. You may pay a bit more than you would from China-based sellers on eBay, but you'll be far more likely to get a genuine product.

If you go the "Roadhawk" website you will see a camera that is unobtrusive and is running all the time the ignition is on.

I have had one for two years now, and it will give peace of mind.
I used to be indecisive but now I am not sure.

  • If you have an android phone then search for dailyroads voyager on google play. It is free and I use it daily on my drive to and from work. There are others such as Autoboy Blackbox and AutoGuard Blackbox but haven't really used them for any length of time.
  • I have a Drift HD camera, lovely piece of kit. I only got it because i not only drive, but ride a motorbike. And the dash mounted cams wasnt any good for bolting to a bike.

Big bro also has a camera bolted to his bike, Insurance loved it when someone knocked him off, then tried to get out of paying by saying "it wasnt him, he was nowhere near that area"

For a fun filled evening, youtube dashcam and see some of the hilarious things people film while driving,

They turn on and off with the ignition, you put an 8gb SD in and they cycle round overwriting the oldest file when the card is full, mine is set for 15 minute segments of video.
