Security number (CCV)

Is this required for a card not present transaction?

I always thought when buying stuff online or over the phone, aswell as the card number and expiry date, they also required the 3 digit CCV number and without it the transaction could not be completed.

However when adding my new debit card to my acount on Amazon, i noticed they never ask for the CCV number. So if its not required to process an order, what is the purpose of it?

Amazon are one of the few companies that don't ask for the CCV.

    Its upto the retailer.

Amazon seem to be happy that their internal security measures are good enough to manage without it.

And to be honest. Fraud to amazon is very rare.

  • As I recall if they opt not to use it then any fraud becomes their (the retailers) problem and the card company will not refund them.

If you didn't sign either, you could claim a refund in that case, as theres no proof that you actually made the transaction. Not that its probably worth doing for the price of a cinema ticket.

dalesrider: How do you know how much fraud Amazon has? Do you work for them? Last I heard, Amazon was one of the first companies that thiefs used, as all they needed was the card number and an empty house with valid post code.

Yes the expiration date doesn't normally even matter half the time you can put in the wrong expiration date and it will go through.

I don't mean that buying through Amazon is insecure. I don't know what their internal security procedures are like. I was talking more along the lines that if you have just a valid card number (no expiry date, CVV, etc), It was reported that Amazon are (were?) the first company to try it on, as others typically ask for at least the CVV, or do additional checks such as AVS.
