    Get the car booked in at a Council run MOT centre. They don't go looking for work. As for loyalty - that means nothing these days to anyone.

    Just get it serviced elsewhere..

    My vote would be finding a trustable good independent, and having them do the work.

    I'm of the belief that it's important to maintain your vehicle, but far from essential to pay main dealer rates - even with some token 20% discount.

    Perhaps get one or more quotes from good independents, and see how that stacks up with what the dealer wants to charge, then get the work done on where you've had most reason to trust and give trade to?
  • I'd be livid if a car that new had those problems.

    My current motor is from 1996 and has only needed service items and a starter motor in its life, suspension bushes at 3 years is insanity.

    I'm just needing to replace 2 rear suspension bushes, they'll be the only 2 that have ever been changed.

    And I thought VAG were supposed to over-engineer everything!

    Sounds about right.

    Its a 4 year old car with presumably close to 50K miles. Suspension bushings at that miles is hardly unusual giving how crap our roads are.

    Turbo pipes? Sadly thats part of the price we pay for driving turbo diesels, particularly (as is the case here), they are often the wrong choice for the mileage being done.

    its actually quite an interesting summation of the new / used car market these days. Manufacturers want customer to change their cars every three years and the stick used is often looming repair bills once out of warranty.

    Moreoften main dealers wont even stock used cars over three years old for this reason, they palm them off to second layer traders.

    It has been known for vehicle manufacturers to get their dealers to 'overlook' or 'temporarily patch-up' failing items to get them through the warranty period, then, when it is no longer covered, tell the customer that they need the part replaced at some huge amount of money.

    BMW, have also had their problems over the years as well, so it seems the German car industry as a whole is going backward in the quality stakes.

    I'd send your inquiry to Honest John of Telegraph motoring, he might be able to offer same advice on getting it sorted. Of the car is still running though and the work can hold off, I'd definitely look to an independent garage for quotes. As you're not in warranty you've no need to stay in the dealer network.

    It is actually possible to get a well built VW with decent customer service. They call them Skodas.
