It's been known for legitimate sites to get hacked or their advertising servers to be compromised allowing dodgy things to happen without any user intervention.

So yes, it doesn't always mean you viewed a suspect site - but in reality in usually indicates that was the case

This has got to be a wind up, no-one would honestly believe that a free internet browser is a bad thing.

OP this would have happened on ANY web browser full stop, it has absolutely nothing to do with Apple and everything to do with you and what websites you are browsing.

As far as I can tell you have two options, either don't use the internet at all on anything or get a little thicker skin and learn to deal with it and use the back/close button, something like openDNS has options to prevent such sites but as with everything it is not 100% effective.

Also I sincerely hope the 'free magazine website' you were browsing was a legitimate legal one (if it was it would definitely not have sent you to such a site) otherwise I question your morals that you are ok stealing magazines but find a little accidental adult content so outrageous.
