In the first quarter of 2013 it hopes to release a new version of a sensor that is integrated with an electronic tag that fines motorists who are illegally parked in resident spaces and disabled parking bays

    Huh?

Huh, that is, to both the language ("fines"? "illegally"?) and the technology.

  • Bearing in mind thats an Australian perspective, it may well be illegal to park in a resident or disabled bay over there.

That would never surprise me. I have spent a lot of time in Oz and it never ceases to amaze me that in the land of tough guys going walkabout it seems to be illegal to so much as break wind.

I'm not surprised considering the effect that kangaroo & possum meat has on the bowels! :D

Do not dismiss this as "an Australian perspective".

I think you're missing the point. The write-up may well have been in an online offshoot of the Sydney Morning Herald but the article is actually about our very own Town and City Parking (TCP) based in Perth (Scotland) and members of the BPA AOS.

TCP were acquired in January this year by CPT (Car Parking Technologies Ltd - which is actually a Kiwi company that is listed on the Australian stock market) and this article details what CPT discovered once they took over.

When CPT announced the take over they made it clear that they had acquired TCP in order to establish a base for selling their car park sensors into Europe. The sensors can detect when a parking space is occupied and will silently alarm when the vehicle has overstayed allowing an attendant to issue a ticket.

I would remind posters that both Oz and NZ are common law jurisdictions and the law with regard to parking is very similar to that here albeit that they take a slightly different view to the application of the principle of distress damage feasant in respect of clamping. There is no greater or different rights for private companies to issue "fines" in Oz or NZ than exists in the UK.
My very sincere apologies for those hoping to request off-board assistance but I am now so inundated with requests that in order to do justice to those "already in the system" I am no longer accepting PM's and am unlikely to do so for the foreseeable future (August 2016). :(

For those seeking more detailed advice and guidance regarding small claims cases arising from private parking issues I recommend that you visit the Private Parking forum on PePiPoo.com

A pile of sand or soil accidentally deposited on each 'sensor' would do wonders without any permanent damage. Or even a piece of cardboard from any Supermarket boxes lying about, trapped with a stone, would be fun. Then let your disabled granny park on top and shop in peace, knowing the sensor will be screwed and she can ignore any fake PCN but also ignore any discriminatory, arbitrary time limit.

If done for the right reasons, for a disabled motorist to park without big brother watching them, it could cause all sorts of problems for the PPC without any comeback on the person kicking the soil/cardboard there.

    :D
PRIVATE 'PCN'? DON'T PAY BUT DON'T IGNORE IT (except N.Ireland).

A nice big notice pointing all parkers to some of the parking forums would be doubly effective.
  • Picture on TCP website.

    Wouldn't it be funny if:

He's smiling because he's pinching her shopping in lieu of the 100's of unpaid fake PCN tickets he's issued over to her the past few months. It's lost his company £100's and he's not happy about it.

She's smiling because the bag contains nothing but some out of date yogurts and reams of ignored threatograms.(All used as hamster bedding, or worse, beforehand).
