Gas bill, Electric only?

I've been living in a 2 Bed house now for about year anda half, last 3-4 months been getting lettings about overdue gas bill of around £100,
Now, We have eco 7 heaters, and storage heater for water, electric cooker, etc etc, no gas at all, and the landlord is my father in law and i've asked him about it, and he confirmed no gas either.
So why are EDF hounding lettings at " the occupier " for a gas bill between a period of time i've been living here, for gas, when there is none? what should I do as they're now threating to get a warrant to install prepay or disconnect the supply, ( none of which bothers me ) I just don't want any court costs to arise to me or anyone to enter my property without me being there.

Does the bill specify the supply address? Is that yours?
What is the meter number?
If the letter suggests the bill relates to your address, and is a meter number that does not exist at your address, then you could inform the supplier of this.
Or you could just ignore the letters. The supplier won't get anywhere with a bill only addressed to 'the occupier' - it needs a persons name.0 -

Have you asked them?0 -
Is it for standard charges? If so, you are responsible for those as its in the tariff.
Is it estimated consumption? If so, give a reading off the meter to cancel it out subject to the above point.
Sounds like the landlord made alterations to make it all electric and didn't resolve the gas...probably to save on costs.
The landlord is also liable outside of any tenancy periods so the supplier would want to bill them for any standing charges if there is no use. Landlords have a habit of forgetting about this...:rotfl: It's better to live 1 year as a tiger than a lifetime as a worm...but then, whoever heard of a wormskin rug!!!:rotfl:0 -
Well, it says " Contract Account Number : *longnumber* "
and it's just got
Owner/Occupier from 15/11/2011 to 08/08/12
then my address.
However I've been here since 03/2011. so it's a bit strange that suddenly since the 15th of November this gas bill cropped up.
Doesn't say about estimated consumption or standard charges etc.
The old gas box thingy we have reads 9999 in black then 50 in red, but that's the only thing I know about that is anything to do with gas in the property.0 -
So if you have a meter you will get a gas bill. Even if you don't use gas at all, standing charges will apply unless you are on a NSC tariff.
Meter on 9999 sounds like it may have stuck? No free lunch, and no free laptop0 -

I hate standing charges(it will cost me £300 annually for electric and gas)so I undertand the OP not wanting to pay(and especially in his case as the house is all electric)but as said if a gas meter is on the property I guess they can ask for money but it is strange how the meter is set and how they are addressing the bills being sent out and why the bills started suddenly from a certain date.
I may be cold but I would love to have the gas meter taken out or capped so hopefully that would be seen as not having a meter on the property...but living in an HA property I suspect they would not allow that to be done...and yet having said that, I seem to remember years ago the gas meter was removed as we were all electric. I can't remember how that happened now. But back then we were under a different land lord(a council)
The trouble is if you find a tariff that has no standing charges it seems most have the disadvantage that they are accounts that can see the actual cost of gas and electric increased at the utility companies will...so the standing charge may be the lesser of two evils.
I still believe you should just pay for what is used and the meter should be seen as a way for the utility company to measure what you have used of what they supply. But it is not going to happen.
Ideally there should be no private utility companies and the cost of electric and gas which are essentials to our daily lives should be as cheap as possible. But it will never happen..."A government afraid of its citizens is a Democracy. Citizens afraid of government is tyranny!" ~Thomas Jefferson

Well I only realized we had this gas box today as I asked landlord again about it. and so he pointed me to it, ..
So I guess I need to pay this out then? :S I don't understand why there are charges for gas when I've not used any? how do they get away with that? and can I disconnect it completely?0 -
That's the issue though, what is the bill for?
The standing charges must be referenced on the bill e.g. standing charge at X over X days. The readings will be shown on the bill and the advance would shown as a kwh value e.g. X kwh at X.
So, what can you see?
Your meter may be stopped or just not in use. If the supplier was charging due to a stopped meter, they would have to change it first.:rotfl: It's better to live 1 year as a tiger than a lifetime as a worm...but then, whoever heard of a wormskin rug!!!:rotfl:0
