Passport stolen, help needed re BA Flight.

Son in law travelled to Milan today for two days on behalf of his job. Sadly, he had his briefcase stolen with Passport, Credit Cards and Driving Licence. (I know, I know..........). He put a stop on his CC's and is at present at the Police stn. He has an app' in the morning re the issue of a temp' passport.
He was due to fly home Friday and then join my family to fly out to Italy on Sunday for a family wedding on Wed'. He is now thinking of staying on in Italy and joining us when we land on Sunday. Then use the return part of his BA flight to fly home the following Sunday.
The problem with that is BA will not allow him to not use the outbound part of his ticket and then use the return! They want to cancel the ticket and charge him over £400 for the one way ticket to fly home. Any suggestions, please.
Second problem, the car hire is in his name. We can produce the paper driving licence but he has no credit cards. Will the car hire accept the paper part and perhaps my daughters CC?
It is a nightmare. Any advice welcome.

Yes, that is correct, BA will automatically cancel the return if the outbound flight is not taken. Could he book a single on one of the low cost carriers?
As for the car hire, you will have to ask the company in question.0 -
I think the only thing he can do is cancel his BA flight and then book a one way with BA or Ryanair. I don't fancy his chances of getting onto a Ryanair flight with a temporary passport. He might be better to just pay the extra and fly BA.
Just spoke with car hire co and he will not be able to get the car without CC and licence. Oh dear.

Check Skyscanner for prices - there is no reason why Ryanair (or any airline) would have a problem if he has the correct paperwork.0

Not sure how his employer can make a better job of things. It was his fault that his bag was taken. I'm sure they will be willing to help him get home but if he comes home on Friday as planned (with temp passport) he then won't be able to fly out again for the holiday/wedding, using the same temp/emergency passport.
Just used skyscanner and found flights for the Saturday at £61 with Ryanair and £161 with BA.0 -

The employer is responsible for getting him home, but as you say that is not the problem here.
Does he have luggage to check in? If so, that will up the Ryanair fare a good bit. If not, I'd book it - they are probably as used to dealing with temp passports as any other airline.0 -

Most employers have comprehensive travel insurance for their employees. The travel insurer might well pay a one-way flight from Italy to the UK so he can stay in Italy and get a new passport from a British consulate.
Now I can see what you meant! That is one suggestion none of us had thought of. Thank you.0 -

If he gets the the emergency passport, he has a ticket to fly home on Friday, paid for by his employer. The problem then is, he will be unable to fly out again on Sunday using the emergency passport.
Only hand luggage, so no problem there.0 -
Just received a call from dgtr, Milan Police rang son in law to inform him that his bag, passport, driving licence, car keys and credit cards were handed in 20 miles from where they were stolen. Missing items, ipod, iphone/wallet with cash.
Now he has to try and get CC unblocked. Looks like holiday is back on for him.
Thanks to above posters for advice.0
