newpaper "offers" - returns?

My dad recently ordered a "free" translator from a newpaper offer. The translator was out of stock so they sent a calculator and a passport cover instead. The substitutes are not acceptable, but they are not faulty either (they are still sealed).
What are the rules regarding returns of "free" items? (the item was free but there was a postage charge). Do DSR rules apply?

DSRs don't matter. You didn't get what you wanted so SOGA applies. The item is not as described.
EDIT: And they are liable for refunding postage as well as arranging for collection whether it be by sending someone or paying for its return. One important thing to remember is that when you get to the end of this sentence, you'll realise it's just my sig.0 -

You would of complained if you got no free item, You would be here (blah blah blah ordered a news paper and never got the free item, What are my right to get this free item)
What do you expect them to do pluck one out of thin air and give you it. Grow up and accept the Gift.
Better still go buy the actual product.0 -
I don't understand the issue, would you rather a free something or nothing at all?
Were there any conditions attached to this freebie?Thinking critically since 1996....0 -
Why should the OP be out of pocket for something they didn't ask for?One important thing to remember is that when you get to the end of this sentence, you'll realise it's just my sig.0

What postage?
Only thing that relates to postage there is sending the free items back.
Its not the companies fault the OP's dad or OP doesn't like the free gifts, Why should the company pay for them to be returned.
As I said the item was out of stock and im sure it would have said "Subject to availability" before ordering. So is the company to pluck the translator out of the air.0 -
I think you have misread the OP.
They saw an offer for a translator and had to pay the postage for it to be sent to them. But they got something else instead. So they are already out of pocket for something they didn't orderOne important thing to remember is that when you get to the end of this sentence, you'll realise it's just my sig.0 -
