Nappy rash

Looking for help as our little lady currently has a very sore bum that is showing no signs of improving. We have tried a variety of potions and lotions, so I thought I would turn to the collective wisdom of these boards for advice.
We have tried airing her for ever increasing periods of time but with little improvement. She isn't upset about it, but being first time parents we are getting concerned that it isn't getting any better and come seeking help.
All ideas and advice will be considered....

OK - how old is she? is she teething? what creams have you tried? what nappies are you using?
suggestions, in no particular order.....
go back to using water and cotton wool to clean her - it might be that she is allergic to one of the ingredients of the wipes / lotions that you are using. Very few children are allergic to water!
continue to allow as much air as possible to get to her bum - it will help with healing
take her to the GP - it is possible that she has infected nappy rash or thrush which wil need either antibiotic cream (for infection) or anti-fungal cream (if thrush)
try any of the following if you haven't already... metanium (watch out, it stains!), zinc and castor oil cream, pseuocream (sp?), kamilosan (sp?!), egg white (painted on with pastry brush!, not tried it but it's supposed to be good!)
try different brand of nappies (if using dispoables) or add extra rinse cycle (if using cloth)
good luck!
eta - also you need to be changing her nappy very frequently! how often does it get changed now?0 -
I had the same problem when mine was teething. Then allergic to sudacrem! Then some makes of zinc & castor oil. Finally settled for boots own brand z&co, & eventually it all settled down.

Another vote for metanium for normal nappy rash, but like Becky says, if it is particularly stubborn it could well be thrush. My DD1 started with a nappy rash which wouldn't improve and soon got spots on her face too, needed clotrimazole cream to sort it out which you can get over the counter I think, but better to have it diagnosed by the gp.0

i am on baby number 2 shes 2 and still gets nappy rash but very rarely ,
i use contrane crean its cheap and stays on and leaves a waterproof seal on her bottom. sudicream melts and does nothing ifs its really sore. if its really bad bleeding and really red i use canisten cream and its normally fine after 1 day. that is what the doctor will give you. also remember you can go to the chemist and under the minor alments programme you can speak to your pharmasisit and get it for free .
these are the only 2 creams i use after using every one on the shelf.
excuse the spelling theres no spell check on MSELife should not be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in an attractive and well preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways, chocolate in one hand, champagne in the other, body thoroughly used up, totally worn out and screaming ~ WOO HOO what a ride!0 -
you are doing the right thing by airing her!,you don't say how old she is but I guess she is probably teething my children always got nappy rash when teething.I use to use fullers earth powder I don't even know if you can still get it my youngest is now 18,just use to lightly apply on a nappy liner and it helped(didn't use disposables).Have you also tried just washing her (when changing nappies ) with just water no cleaners soap etc as they maybe aggrevating the rash0

hi clive
as you know i don't have kids of my own, but used to nanny several babies.
I agree with above poster - go back to water and cotton wool and see if it helps.
also try visiting your GP or asking your HV about it.
Keep her aired and even try changing her nappies a little more often (or even just checking her more regularly)
If you use disposables - could she be allergic to those in anyway????
HTH and good luck xr.mac, you are so wise and wonderful, that post was lovely and so insightful!0 -
Firstly, make sure it isn't thrush, get appropriate anti fungal cream. If it is thrush it will clear.
If it is nappy rash and now ladies, don't laugh! An old wives remedy that really does work! When my kids got nappy rash I washed the area gently with cotton wool and some gentle cleaning lotion, NOT soap. Pat dry, apply very thin layer of a barrier cream, but very very thin. Then take ordinary cornflour, yes cornflour!! and pat onto bum, making sure area is covered. You will not believe the difference in the morning!
Once you have stopped laughing, try it! You won't believe the difference. Of course, if it is thrush use the anti fungal and then pat on cornflour.
I used no powder on my babies butts, just cornflour. The cornflour absorbs the moisture. Now and again you may find the bum a little dry in areas, but then just apply some lovely moisturiser!
And of course, airing the bottom works wonders too!0 -
Lots of fresh air for her botty, and make sure if she is bottle fed that she is getting enough plain water too, to keep her urine watered down;)Member of the first Mortgage Free in 3 challenge, no.19

Cheers,
Our little lady is 9 months old. The nappy rash started when she started teething, that's was prompted us to start looking for her tooth.
There don't appear to be any new teeth coming through at the moment, we had a good look around, and it has never really improved since her first tooth came through. She did get thrush in her mouth early on with the breast feeding, my other half got it in her breasts (very very painful but she stuck with the breast feeding), might be worth seeing if that is back to haunt us.
We do use disposable nappies (nature nappies) it might be worth trying a different brand in case she has developed an allergy. We have tried, Sudocrem, Kamilosan, olive oil, one begining with C (but can't remember full name). I am sure I have some corn flower in the kitchen.
We are off to the GPs this afternoon so we see what she has to say.
Thanks to everybody for the advice, once again I am glad to be a member of this community and so will our little girl if we can get rid of her baboon bum.

My DD suffered a sore bottom from a tiny baby to about age 8. It could be fine for wekks and then suddenly would get very red and angry. She had sensitive skin so I used just water and cotton wool to clean her as wet wipes made her skin sore. Also the post inferring that you don't change nappy often enough, ignore. I know well meant but a relief HV said that to me when DD was very young and it really upset me as I kept her spotless and frequently changed her nappy. Also tried to tell me it was something I was eating as she was breastfed. Take DD to Doc. My Doc was really good as his baby was going through the same thing. He felt it was tied into the infantile excema DD had. I was given a mild hydro cortisone cream for the severe outbreaks i.e. when the skin is on the verge of cracking (you use sparingly and only when necessary), other times I used a medicated cream which Doc prescribed (think it was Hewletts) quite expensive to buy about £12 a tub if I remember rightly. Even when out of nappys we still had outbreaks of it and then I would just use some cream overnight and it would be clear by the morning. It can get very painful and distressing for them.
Personally I found if DD wasn't drinking enough water it would flare up. She has never been much of a drinker and I still age 12 have to remind her to have a drink as she can go all day without a drop! I don't think this explained it as a baby as she was breastfed but I do think it contributed as she got older.~Laugh and the world laughs with you, weep and you weep alone.~:)
