Price for new boiler. Opinions Please

Hi

I have been quoted £1,380 for a boiler replacement. It's a Main 30HE 25KW, with standard flue and time clock. The price includes Magna Clean, Scale Reducer and fittings + gas safety certificate. The engineer is Gas Safe Registered.

I asked if I need a power flush and he said no because I will be getting the Magna Clean and Scale Reducer. However I have been told I should get a power flush because my new boiler will be ruined in the future. Do you think I still need a power flush?

Also he wants me to pay for half the work up front, once he buys all the parts and comes to carry out the work I will need to give him a cheque. Does this sound normal? If this person is on the Gas Safety Register website with all his info [gas reg. number etc] he can't possibly be a con artist can he??

I was told I could get this done for £1,500-1,600 max by a contractor from a very well known firm, SO i'm thinking this is a good deal?!

Nothing wrong with that boiler if you are after a cheapish boiler.

If you have a bath I would recommend a 30Kw version.

A Magnaclean or other magnetic cleaner is NOT a substitute for have a proper flush first. They are meant to be an addition to catch what little muck is left after a flush.

Just because he is gas safe registered, dosen't mean he isn't a cowboy or a con man.

You need to satisfy yourself about him before accepting any quote etc

Some ask for half up front, most don't, but he may have been caught by unscrupulous customers in the past, or he may not have an account anywhere, so has to pay cash.

Is this going to be a cheap 'cash job'?

Agree with gas4you..cheap boiler..sh&tcatcher is no substitute for proper flushing if old system.
Feudal Britain needs land reform. 70% of the land is "owned" by 1 % of the population and at least 50% is unregistered (inherited by landed gentry). Thats why your slave box costs so much..
  • Thanks for your replies, i got another quote; £1,600;

£670 for the Main boiler, Magnaclean, parts etc and power flush=£900ish, labour is £700.

[This is for my tenants] I've been told Main is a good make, obviously its not a Worcester boiler....
  • I know I'm going to sound like a stick in the mud but, a "proper powerflush" should take most of a day to carry out, assuming the OP hasn't got just 3 rads! So how are we explaining a proper powerflush here because when I do them its £350 inc chemicals (please no comments on my pricing) dependant on system size (cheaper if tiny house), if I start at 9am on average I dont finish until 4.30. Can the OP explain if the quoted powerflush is just a quick rinse or what I believe to be a proper flush, individual rads etc?
Not being funny but if its a full powerflush thats a blooming good deal!
p.s. Main are a cracking budget boiler when installed properly.

Hi, the engineer didn't really explain the full process of the power flush. its a 1 bed.flat and there are 5 rads....

I'd give him a call and ask him to explain his powerflushing. He maybe just planning to connect the powerflush up to the heating circuit and quickly give it a tickle. It'll move some sludge but I wouldn't think it'll make a massive difference. Better than nowt I suppose.
