Very old news and a non story really :-

'A Travelodge spokesman said: "In July 2005 some customer information was obtained by deception from our Skipton hotel.

"Just two illegal transactions were made of minimal value. Since this incident, no customer paperwork is stored at hotels and staff have been trained to deal with this type of crime." '

2 Illegal transactions - I doubt it. A high percentage of this type of fraud isn't investigated. It is almost impossible determining where someones card or personal details have been compromised, therefore we will never know just how many fraudulent transactions have taken place due to this or other breaches.

Six months on, internet lapses still posing risk.

If you want to render your personal information worthless for those wishing to apply for credit cards, loans or to open bank accounts in your name.

This is a problem typical of mass data storage. Where there is a large sum of money to be made, either a system will be hacked (whether encrypted or not) or employees will be corrupted. It's the 'data-mad' age we live in. The previous poster was right, there is a lot of fraud in this country via the banking system (often through corrupt employees) and if it's for small amounts the banks do not even investigate it, they just refund the money.

But if you think that THIS example is bad, just wait until the new National Identity Register starts, which will store up to 200 pieces of personal information on each individual in the country. (The passport and identity service is already collecting information from and on new passport applicants, to be ready for the NIR) And WHEN, not IF, that information is stolen, it will be next to impossible for victims to function in normal life - proposals have been that you will need your ID number and PIN to get money from a bank, get a prescription at the chemists, use any public services and your ID card number to rent as well as buy housing.

Now imagine that a fraudster has your id details off that database, and also remember that you have no legal right to dispute the information on the database or correct it....kind of puts the TKMAxx thing into perspective.
