I don't use milk or butter in mine, it is a wartime one that my mum taught me and it is lovely and less calories :)

Me neither. I soak the bread in water and then squeeze out the excess. I don't put in the fruit, sugar, spices until after the squeezed bread is in the bowl.

I also just use normal white sugar which is cheaper. To give it a bit of colour I use a bit of instant coffee powder or a small cup of made up coffee. You can't taste it in the finished pudding as it's quite a small amount in the whole pudding.

    Hi threeboysmummy :)

I get the frozen scones out and pop on a baking tray. They don't need to be totally defrosted and I just put them in the oven when there's space.

You can soak bread, cake or dried fruit in cold tea for extra flavour.
If you've have not made a mistake, you've made nothing

You can ale soak them in apple or orange juice if people would prefer that?
That sounds like a classic case of premature extrapolation.

Had a lovely dinner tonight, it is a variation of Chicken Amatriciana NPM gave me the link.

    http://www.bbcgoodfood.com/recipes/amatriciana-chicken-traybake

A bag of chicken portions £1.69 Aldi
A tin of tomatoes 25p from the cupboard
Half a bag of salad potatoes 50p
1½ tsp of Turkish pul biber (Aleppo pepper flakes) My Turkish neighbour brought me some back so I don't know how much, but she said it costs literally pennies over in turkey.
2 flat mushrooms, sliced I used the ones from Aldi super six that I bought on Wednesday just before it changed 25p
half a pack of pepperoni slices 49p

Halve the potatoes and parboil them
Put the chicken portions into a deep dish or baking pan and put them in the oven to roast.
When the potatoes are done, drain and put into the pan with the chicken.
After 15 minutes add the pepperoni slices, tomatoes, a tin of water using the tomato can as a measure, pul biber and sliced mushrooms, gently stir to combine well.
leave for another 15 minutes or so until the tomato sauce has thickened serve with home grown runner beans.
    They all loved it :D

Total cost for five £3.18 or 64p per portion.
Blessed are the cracked for they are the ones that let in the light
