Finally, after nearly 8 months of asking I have finally got my money back from dotcomgiftshop for an awful piece of furniture that lasted 6 months. It's really poor quality but today, after 2 replacements that I subsequently posted back, they have finally granted me a refund to the tune of £55.20 in the form of a cheque :D

Wont add it to my total but it'll look lovely in my savings account :D

  • Interesting idea this "money making" challenge but I can see a flaw.

It seems to me that in some cases the more you want to save then the more money you have to spend.

For example, I could get a coupon to buy a bottle of Coca Cola. However, ASDA coke is far cheaper than Coca Cola with a coupon. Therefore to save money on the discounted Coca Cola I would have to spend more money than just buying ASDA coke.

I never bother with coupons as they are just incentives for you to spend money on branded items.

As far as clothes are concerned I get free t-shirts from wherever I can get them. I get pairs of shoes for nothing from an uncle with the same sized feet who gets them from a son in law. My uncle doesn't like some of the shoes and passes them to me. I have darned socks that are over 20 years old and still doing the job.

I am sure I can get discounted computers but why bother when I have two dual core machines for nothing from Freecycle.

I grow most of my own vegetables. I don't eat processed food so coupons to buy such food would be wasted on me. I spend between £1 and £1.50 on food per day on myself.

I have a car but rarely use it. I prefer to walk or cycle. The supermarkets can keep their discounted loss-leader petrol.

So, although I accept the challenge of making £10 per day, I will be "making it" rather than "saving it" through coupons. I think people should look at the money going out rather than "savings" as in most cases, you are spending more than you should be.

I agree with your opinion of coupons to some extent, your example is what I do too. But most coupons allow you to get branded items cheaper than value products, even free. Take the popular Lenor coupon, £1 off Lenor, regularly on offer in tesco and sainsburys for £1 so you can get it free.

This thread isn't about saving money, it's about going the extra mile to make money, increase your income. Yes, some of us add coupons as that £1 coupon is effectly a £1 coin.

Your very lucky to get handouts and that's great but someone had to buy it in the first place and usually that someone is me! So when I do I shop in the sale, online for cash back and discount codes and primark. But again, this is saving money not making money.

I'm curious, how do you make extra money?!

Agree with Nat. I only count money I have made as I am paying debts with it and try to save money as a matter of course.

However for some people counting savings works for them - that is the point of this thread, make the challenge work for you :)

And coupons on coke would save me money as while I try to save money where possible for some things I will only buy the brand name, and coke is one of them!

    I'm curious too.

    I just don't spend what I have.

I downsized a few years back. Sold my childhood on eBay. Some nice collectors items; Hornby, Scalextric, metal figurines. The rubbish went in a carboot. I had a few thousand books. They went on Amazon. I just read free books on a Kindle now.

I sold my CD and DVD collection. Not before ripping them all to a hard drive.

No outgoing calls on a mobile phone. No satellite or cable TV. A free ingenious method for connecting to the Internet (you will have to research that one yourself).

I am lucky in that I received a voluntary redundancy back in 2002. Since then I live like a monk to eek things out. I have had about 2 years of part-time work since. I have set aside money to pay for my last 9 years of the 30 years of NI contributions to get my state pension.

I don't feel that I deserve a retirement villa or holidays every year and will accept my fate when the money runs out.

I do voluntary stuff like house and animal sitting. I sometimes tour in a jeep with the front passenger seat removed so I could build a wooden platform for a bed. No hotels and no B&Bs.

Where there is a will there is a way. And I have a large will not to spend money to keep the Evil Triumvirate of politicians, bankers and corporations in the style to which they are accustomed.
  • Hi there? Can I join this please? I aim to only make £1 a day and if I can do it, I will up it next month! So thats £30 by the end of September - and I'm already at £8.09 / £30, two days ahead of target! :-D x
