I use regular baking recipes but ditch the naughty stuff. So for a cake, I'd probably go with self-raising flour, eggs, I'd switch the butter/marg for a smaller quantity of oil (olive oil or salmon oil probably) and no sugar - could grate some carrot or apple in for a bit of sweetness but a dog would go equally as mad for tuna or blende liver! You could then use cream cheese to frost it, or peanut butter. Give in limited quantities and freeze the excess as treats for the future or dish out to his doggy pals so he doesn't get a sore belly from all that cake!0

That's great! Thank you

My parents have 2 dogs and my work colleagues have dogs so I will share it out!
I'm so excited, I've got him some presents already

wilykit, I really don't want to pee on your fireworks and I can appreciate where you are coming from.
To celebrate Bully's birthday, why not take him for an extra special walk, and donate the money you would spend on ingredients to the local rescue home.
A one off rich meal can play havoc, and a dog would appreciate a different, longer walk, with different sniffs much more. Food is food to a dog, even if it does have a "sprig of parsley for garnish" on their birthday meal.
I really don't want to be a party pooper, but.........
Every day is a birthday to Bully if you treat him good, feed him well, walk him and most of all make yourself fun to be with.
OK - now shoot me down!

I take Bully on special walks as much as I can, I try and tke him new places so he can go paddling etc. And I help at my local rescue as often as I can.
I know food is food to him, but I want to make it an even more special day for him. And this is why I asked for a simple recipe because I don't have a lot of money.
I do treat him well. Infact he is like my baby and anybody who knows me knows how bonkers I am for my dog!

I don't think a small slice or two of a homemade cake is going to be overly different to a Dentastix or a pigs ear and dog owners give their dogs treats like that regularly. I would far rather feed my dogs a slice of homemade cake made with the above recipe than a Dentastix with who-knows-what in it actually! Yes, it may be more for our benefit than the dog but as long as you're not stuffing a dog full of a 3-storey cake glazed in a 1" layer of melted dog chocolates, lined with Bonios and served with a gallon of dog gravy, I don't see the harm in a little indulgence. Taking photos of our beloved pets doesn't really benefit them either but no one on here tends to dislike a cute photo thread!
The MSE/practical side in me would be cutting the remainder of the cake into titbits to freeze in containers and use for training sessions as a high value treat for many days to follow.0 -
Have a look at Willows kitchen on it's a spring thing, some nice recipes on there http://www.itsaspringthing.net/feeding/willowskitchen.php0

Tyson had cheese on toast for his birthday the other week. He absolutely loved it! He goes crazy for cheese on toast when I have it and looked gobsmacked when he had his own portion in his bowl!
Not the healthiest option though I must admit!
I think dogs do appreciate it when we do something special for them. Even if they don't realise that what we are doing is for an occasion I think they pick up on our emotions and excitement
