Martin Lewis stands up for renters on breakfast TV

There was a piece on breakfast tele this morning about renters delaying having families because they dont want to have kids on private ASTs. Who can blame them?

A young couple were shown having to live with their parents to try and save for a meagre flat.

They had Martin on later who explained that people needn't feel bad about renting, and aren't losers.

He said that in places where prices had dropped 20% homeowners are the losers and renters are the winners.

Martin Lewis said some home owners are losers while renters are winners.

Its great to see a respected and high profile television person who has made a great success of himself sticking up for renters, and not pouring scorn and shame on them for not owning a house, due to reasons beyond their control.

Hopefully there will be more to come.

It would be nice if this view filters through onto this part of the website.

    Couldn't agree more.
I'm a landlord as well as a homeowner and I think you'll find most landlords have the utmost respect for the majority of renters. (The few exceptions may be, for example, those not managing to pay their rent)

Whilst, of course, I'm not particularly happy to be the loser in such a financial scenario I shall maintain my side of the bargain (for that is what it is) and continue to supply a house for rental purposes to the winners in this scenario.
You win some, you lose some. Such is life, I'll just have grin and bear it.

Its a shame we have so many people now at the mercy of a stangers greed.

I must say we had the exact same idea of not starting a family in rented accomodation so stayed with our parents a little longer and saved, but along the way I did get some abuse from some members on here.

Its a shame really that we put people in lose/lose situations, pay somebody elses mortgage or get called a mummies boy/girl.

That's just a part of the story though isn't it Percy.
You like to portray the innocent bystander but I'm not sure it all adds up.
For example you like to bandy around such provocative stuff as calling all us landlords "parasites". It's hardly surprising one of the nutters on here therefore wanted to return the favour and taunt you back.
It is now clear we homeowners are the losers in some financial scenarios thanks to ruggedtoasts highlighting of the issue. It therefore stands to reason as a landlord we stand a chance of being a loser twice over or worse!
Please bear that in mind in the future.
It's not all champagne and truffles you know.

p.s. Hope you had a nice honeymoon

I still can't see how you can lose as a landloard, a free house is a free house even if its final value varies.

I do still think the the word parasite does best described the relationship of most landlords and the housing market. The basic question are landlords in it for the good of the housing market or the good of themselves?

    Honeymoon was loverly cheers.

Would appear to have more to do with self publicity than anything else. Renting has been an integral part of the housing market for years.

You may scoff, but to beleaguered tenants starved on a diet of rent increases, insecure tenancy, and mocking popular culture caricaturing them as life's losers, Martin's words would have been like nectar.

He also slammed 'property !!!!!!' shows that encourage people who rent and have sensible sustainable finances to overstretch themselves buying property.

Who's scoffing? Renters often get a bum deal and I reckon that the chances are, as more and more people seem to be renting than buying, laws will be changed to give tenants more rights.

However, be careful for what you wish.

Well, I'm not sure who to feel sorrier for, the residents of Damascus or those poor beleaguered renters...

I'm a landlord and have never treated any tenant other than how I would expect to have been treated myself when I rented. I imagine I'm not the only one who operates that way

Get some perspective for goodness sake.

Are there any figures to show how many tenants are forced to leave after the initial fixed term I know a few landlords and providing the tenants do not cause any problems and pay their rent they are happy to let them stay.
