Question for you landlords, how much work do you actually have to do on a daily/weekly/monthly/yearly basis?

As it is my career choice was based on my skill set and I am sorry to say its not easy, and I do still work 37 hours a week, yes I may get to sit down for most of that but surely you can there is more to it than just sitting down? (if not surely we would all do it?)

    Very little.
Probably only slightly more than say, a photographer, but definitely less than an accountant.
    :D

It's a really interesting point though.
Do you suppose Roman Abramovich does a billion times more work than, say, a miner? Or a nurse?

Just had to look up who Roman Abramovich is :rotfl:

Interesting about photographers, I know a guy in the business and there is a lot of work if you do it correctly. To be honest its much the same as my business, on the surface I turn up with a few cameras film and then go home, but there is much work then to be done.

I do have split opinions with pay in football, at the top is grossly overpaid, but on the flipside if you look at how much money they bring in it potentialy could be justisfied, likewise careers are usually shorter.

    Really? Blimey.
I know Oldham is really where "it" all happens but surely you must look beyond it's boundaries occasionally?

    In my case, about zero.

I'm not a landlord now, but I went to the Far East in 2000, and rented out my main residence, plus a docklands flat.

Would have been difficult to have flown back from Seoul to mend the washing machine, so I paid a so-called 'letting agent' to 'manage' them. 10% of rent + VAT. I can only assume he made a profit out of it, and did very little actual 'work'.

Of course I had to pay for the odd repair here and there.

Being an accountant, maybe you can tell me whether or not I made a profit. Over 6 years, I received £129K in Gross rents. Total costs of management/repairs: £29K. Total cost of mortgage interest: £72.5K. Total increase in House Price inflation: £381K. Tax paid: £0.

My own 'effort' consisted of about 2 minutes per month pressing a few keys on Internet banking.

I didn't realise how unethical I was at the time, but I think I'll get over it....

My sister visited my wife and I last night; we got talking about her considering buying a house. As home owners we actually put forward the suggestion to her that she should consider renting with her OH not buying.

Admittedly I am not a fan of long term renting (12+ Years) but it has its place - strong advantages and IMO the only downside is you end up paying a premium.
