    And therein lies the problem.
Once you have hit the buy button so to speak ,your commited and its only then you find out the postage costs. Which if they are ok is all well and good but if they are extortionate your in the postion of having to pay otherwise you end up being slapped with a npb.
Common sense surely dictates that rather end up with ludicrous p&p costs you avoid like the proverbial plague.

You say you are committed but that's where we differ, ebay say you are committed when you hit the buy button but they also say the full price needs to by displayed, so no commitment to buy in that case.

If I did hit the buy button and got a daft quote for shipping and cancelled but still got a npb and ebay wouldn't cancel it, I would stop buying on ebay.

I can only get ripped off if I were to pay the inflated delivery costs.

So by your reckoning its ok to ignore ebay policy by not displaying p&p upfront so long as in your opinion the costs are fair?
But its not ok to flaunt ebay policy when costs are too high..
Talk about having your cake and eat it lmao:)

where is ebay's policy stating a buyer has to agree to pay an unknown delivery cost?

If they don't have a policy for it how can I be flaunting it?

No, the buyer should state a shipping cost but that is his call, if I choose to go ahead with the purchase I know I can cancel it.

You can cancel it - and I think eBay should make it easier for buyers to initiate a cancellation, given the change to the DSRs next year making it compulsory for business sellers to offer cancellations - but it's not really desirable to do so when most other sellers play by the rules and you can easily, on eBay, find someone who does know what they are doing.

  • Thanks all. I was trying to work out if it's actually against ebay policy to do this.

The history is I bought this for my brother who does not have an ebay account. He emailed me a "hey sis, can you get this for me and I'll square you up with I see you next". He does this quite often and we see eahc other a few times a week so not unusual and never a problem. I clicked the link, hit buy it now and went straight to pay as I normally do with most transactions. I didn't even read the listing. It's only today that I have read it and found that inbedded in the text.
The seller sells a lot of used large medical/lab or industrial equipment and it makes sense that the costs might vary but I was wondering if it's actually against ebay's rules for a seller to vary a cost after an auction has been won? And if they did want extortionately more than stated whether a buyer would have good grounds to cancel/complain and not be penalised as a NPB?
In my case it was a soldering iron so likely a small packet, and the P&P was only £4.00. It's a bit moot as I have just noted the seller has marked it as dispatched so I am guessing he just cut and paste the usual text and it costs no more than this anyway.
All in all I am not unhappy with the transaction (yet anyway) but wondering if I should point out to the seller that this kind of statement about P&P can't be upheld?
And as to the sellers terms for refunds for faulty goods.

If there is a major error in the description which prevents the effective use of the item then the buyer must contact me within 2 days and if agreed and with a returns number return the item in the same state that it was shipped and with adiquate packing at the cost of the buyer

Well that's entirely another issue (great detective work by the way, but you cleaned up the appalling typos I see!) As the seller is registered as a business, he should mention terms for return under distance selling regs, surely?
"So long and thanks for all the fish" :hello:

I wouldn't point it out to him, he sounds an experienced seller to me.

He probably knows it's not within the rules but sees it as a lesser of two evils, best to say if the PP is less or more he will let the buyer know, than !!!! the buyer off if he should get the postage wrong.

When I sell (I am not a business), I always say that S&H is an estimate, and it is nigh-on impossible to cover every country if you are offering international.

If you are using couriers then there still must be some sort of flat rates for continents or areas and with RM it is quite possible to list for every country with very little effort.

Assuming RM you have 4 rates, the weight doesn't change so it is a simple case of reading the prices across 4 lines of text on the RM page

I think that's quicker than answering every single foreign buyer that asks for a price
