Economy 10 Tariff - Scottish Hydro Electric

I have tried numerous times but failed to date to get information on my current electricity tariff and an alternative to switch over too. I currently have an Economy 10 Tariff with Scottish Hydro Electric, I have phoned around alternative suppliers only to be told that they do not offer a connection to such a tariff.

Would I be best to request this type of meter to be taken out so that I can switch suppliers or is my current tariff better than what else is currently on the market.

I feel 'tied' to S.S.E. with no scope to move around the market and possibly missing out on a better rated tariff elsewhere. I am all electric and currently pay £160.00 per month by Direct Debit.

This question comes up quite a bit and there is no definitive answer.

As you have discovered your meter severely limits the choice of company catering for E10.

The only way to be certain is to monitor your consumption during the periods of cheap rate electricity. However that will obviously vary throughout the year.

Some people have reported that Economy 7 is a better option.

What is your installed heating system?

    - rule 1 minority of consumers, and so minority of suppliers
    - therefore rule 2 no advantage within .. .. and little advantage between suppliers
    - rule 3 that consumption is high, very high or your tariff is high ridiculously high
    - rule 4 go here, click on the ' need help button and talk to Katie
    - rule 5 in E7 / E10 terms most people say Scottish Power is about the cheapest tariff, so get a quote from them
    - rule 6 the E10 tariff is the posh luxury end of the E7 market, and like all luxury's they cost more than the average

Assuming an average square area with the usual double glazing and insulation, your tariff appears to be about £500 a year too high even for a stay~home~all~day pensioner. If 'grangrad' means grand-dad depending on the benefits you are on there may me a further £100 or so savings to be had from a Government scheme. Either way you will need to know from your account how many kWh you use per annum.

Tell people here what your kWh consumption is [ see your online account ] , what storage heater and water heating you have, and what size and insulation etc your property has.

Suggest having a read of this thread and post more info about your E10 set up.

If you have a single MPAN E10, all suppliers who are ex regional should have no problem billing you, its the ex regional dual MPAN meters which were unique that some suppliers don't want.

E10 single MPAN is also changeable to E7 and vice versa as there is no difference in how the meter connects to your property.

But you really need to determine your heating needs.

If you are in the old Scottish Hydro region, you need to ensure that you heating is supplied at the best cost and you will use it more than more southerly regions, hence Scotland has some unique heating meters, as do the offshore islands.

Have you got a Total Heating Total Control (THTC) meter by any chance? Some suppliers will take them, others won't as they are ex regional unique set ups.
