Locked to T-Mobile???

If I purchase a new contract phone directly from T-Mobile or from Phones4U will it be network locked to T-Mobile. I know that previous O2 and BT mobile phones I've purchased have not been network locked but I'm not sure about T-Mobile.

Anyone able to help?
Thanks.

Easiest thing to do is it try another network SIM in it.

If you're buying from a shop you can ask them before buying it; they can't tell you it's unlocked if it isn't :)
  • i think most of them are, i got a new phone (nokia 6280) from t mob a few moths ago and gave it to my sis as a birthday present but it was locked to t mob. plus it couldn't be unlocked anywhere apart from t mob (i would of had to wait a month and pay them £30 or something) because it had some new way of locking it or something.
long story short: check first! because if you get one that can only be unlocked by the network its a !!!!!!. i ended up having to get my sis to switch to t mob haha that was easier

Thanks for the replies - I decided I was sick of looking at phone deals so purchased a contract with K800i from T-Mobile today as it was cheaper than my current provider (O2) who refused to offer me any incentive to stay. It is locked on T-Mobile, which means I have to wait 4 or 5 days before I can use it whilst my number ports from across but that isn't too much of a problem

the newer nokias (6630, 6280, n-series etc) are built on the newer BB5 platform, so can only be unlocked by the network as you said.

T-mobile are now being very strict with dealers who provide handset on T-mobile's network.

You will find most, if not all the handsets you get from the big name dealers, CPW, Phones 4 U, The Link, e2save, OSPS, Chitter Chatter mobile etc. will all be T-mobile locked although not all will have the T-mobile logo on them.

This came along shortly after the release of Flext last year and the huge dispute over dealer commissions.

Can I unlock an MDA Vario?

I take it this is a T-mobile phone. It can be unlocked by the network but as quoted above, it take 28 days and costs £3.00.
Also not all the software is guaranteed to work on another network.
