Stovax Stockton 5 rear air vents.

Hi

I have a Stovax Stockton 5 and have noticed there are two small air vents at the the rear of the stove. One to the left and another on the right.

Just wandering what are these for and how open should these small vents be open.

I can feel a small hole with a plate which can be adjusted.

Looked in Stovax instuctions and can find no info about them.

Can anyone advise further.

Thanks.

  • My installer said I might need to adjust the rear vents but didn't say where they went in the system. In the absence of an authoritative post my guess is that they bypass the fire box and will need to be adjusted to suite chimney characteristics. Mine are set about half open.

These are called tertiary vents and their use is one of the black arts of stove burning! A lot of stoves seem to have them, but few manufacturers say much more than, in effect, 'fiddle with them till you get the best results'.

Running a stove is as much art as science so that's probably as much as one can honestly say.

Can anyone with a stockton 5 multi fuel stove with a smokeless kit fitted help. I have just had this stove fitted but the air wash slider will not move from the middle position to the left. From the instructions moving to the left puts it in the boost position and the middle position is for normal burn. Moving it to the right closes the vents which should be where the slider prevents me from moving it to. The installer and shop where I purchased the stove keep telling me this is normal and there is nothing wrong with this. I'm not convinced and would like to hear from anyone with this stove

Both the sliders on my Stockton slide all the way from the left to the right.
The bottom slider is only open when I light the fire and when the temperature is right then I close it by sliding it to the right.
If the slider isn't to the right then the wood burns too quickly.
The top slider is adjusted to control the burn.
Although I have a multi burner I only burn wood....and it isn't smokeless.

    Hope that helps.

Hello PWS52 thank for your response. Unfortunately I have a smokeless kit fitted which makes my airslider work differently to one that hasn't had this fitted like yours. Ideally I need to know how someone with this kit fitted works their air wash slider. But thank you for taking the time to respond.

Have you tried asking Stovax - they should be the ones who know how it works

Have they fitted the slider correctly and possibly upside down?

The smoke control kit has two parts.

One goes in the rear of the stove, the other is a replacement slider, which has an additional piece at the end to prevent full closure of the top (air wash).

It should only stop it sliding all the way to the right. It should not impact the movement to the left (as you look at the stove).

If it's not in properly, or even more worryingly upside down, it won't slide correctly / be reversed in function.

It is a bit of a fiddly ar5e to get it seated correctly.

Thank you both for your replies. I have spoken to stovax and they confirm that it is either fitted incorrectly or the part has been welded incorrectly. I have had the fitter back and he is adamant that he has fitted it correctly and it is impossible to fit upside down or in reverse. The slider has a + (left) and - (right) symbol on it so makes sense of what he says. The shop won't supply a new kit as they state that they have had the same kit fitted into their showroom model and it operates in the same way as mine. The problem is that how it works is totally illogical and shouts " wrong" to me. At present I can only have the slider in the middle position and move it completely to the right. To me that means it is operating in the opt efficiency mode and close position only. As I cannot move it to the full left (the slider will not move at all from the middle position to the left) i don't think I can operate it in the boost position. I have even looked up to see how this effects the air vent holes and in the middle position I have only one side of the vents open and in the far left they are practically fully closed. The shop are adamant that my middle position is now boost and moving it to the right will operate it to the opt efficiency. Really confused now.

I have this Stove so if you can post a picture of how the slider is seated (from picture of the stove will do) and possibly a picture the slider out of the stove i can tell you if it looks correct or not.

They can be a sod to get them sitting right, it mentions it in the destructions.

Hello alleycat. Unfortunately I am not confident enough to remove all the parts to get the slider out. I found it interesting that you say it's fiddley and hard to get it positioned correctlly. My fitter didn't demonstrate time, care or thought in the art of positioning the slider. It took him less than 2 mins to do it. I am contiplating contacting another fitter to come out and take a look at it . I know this will cost me but better an extra fitting cost now than the replacement cost of a damaged stove. Out of interest how does your slider work, are you able to move it from the middle to the far left? I don't know how to post a picture sorry.
