I don't see why any company would need your address.

Not your electricity or gas supplier?
    Your bank?
    Your mortgage lender?
    Royal Mail?
    National Lottery?
    Telephone provider?
    Credit card provider?

Of course, but they are supplying you with a service.

Screwfix wanted the OP's address for absolutely no reason.

How do you know that. Maybe they wanted to put them on their mailing list - that's a reason.

Is it tin foil hat time again?

They take the postcode to learn about their customers, and see where they are travelling from. I gave them my postcode, and now they are opening a new branch in my home town, as obviously lots of people were travelling from there to screwfix.

I just got shot down by the MSE keyboard warriors for suggesting they might want to send him a catalogue.

But is it a good enough reason? Unless OP consented to the catalogue. I don't think it is a good enough reason.

I have the same grief in my local branch even though it states on the in shop order form that you do not have to provide your postcode if you do not wish.

REALLY ! ive had a good look today and nowhere does it say anything about postcode other than the 6 boxes provided to write it in , a bit of jackanory happening here i think .

    :rotfl:@ this thread.

When Screwfix opened it was a trade counter only like Selco is now. To be a customer you had to have a customer number. Particularly important when most tradesmen will have a trade credit account. Their system still needs the customer number.

A lot of guys (including me as it happens) can't remember their customer numbers off the top of the head so the simple way of them to acquire it from their system is to ask for your postcode. So many in fact that they've just stopped asking for the number and just ask for your postcode.

Now anybody can buy from them but they can't change their system to allow for that - they still need to be able to track their trade customers for their accounts to be properly debited and there is no reason why they should change it just because Joe Bloggs off the street walks in to buy something.

Thats what they want it for, there is absolutely nothing sinister about it whatsoever.

You are subverting the entire conspiracy theory ethos of these message boards. Remove that slanderous allegation at once!
