Spending Avois points

I have 89,000 points but have never used any of them. I am going to Australia shortly and staying one night in Singapore Wondering if I should use some of these points to book a hotel. I have points from other sources ie Nectar also points from other Airlines as well as BA.Jet2 and East Coast rail
I know that I could use points and book a BA flight but it always seems to be that the taxes etc mean that there is little savings so tend to ignore them,
I would appreciate if anyone could give me some advice re what I should do, Points for hotels are high for a 4* - 5* 40000 50000 but I suppose it is one way of actually getting some benefit from them

Have you seen any 'reward saver' European flights that you fancy?

You could use 50,000 Avios to upgrade your flights to Oz on BA which would probably give you better value

Highly unlikely because (a) lack of availability, and (b) OP has most likely bought discounted economy tickets which cannot be upgraded with Avios.

The OP would be far better keeping the points for use on a different trip - redemption in business to the US for example.

I am flying with Singapore Airlines which is my prefered Airline and yes I have a good no of Miles with them also. Not enough to upgrade my flight C an't remember how many but you can only use them for flights,
I am a obviously good at collecting miles but then don't know what to do with them I lost a good no of miles some time ago Can't recall who they were with.
I just booked a 1st class Rail ticket and I will have enough points for my next journey. They seem straight forward enough. No taxes etc to deal with.
You are right in saying that it seems wasteful just to spend them on a hotel for one night. Thanks for the advice!

I can't tell if your previous post means you've already spent them, but you could use them on Qantas domestic with almost no fees/surcharges.

No I still have them Flying from Sydney to Perth at the end of my Cruise but to use the Avios points I would have had to fly in the evening and then nothing direct but via Canberra Melbourne or Adelaide. The journey was long and would have got into Perth very late at night. I was able to get a flight with JetStar for £105 which seemed a better option as I will be off the Ship at 9am. With this flight I have booked is at 12md arriving Perth 14,15hrs WA time. Thanks for the information I do appreciate it

We used them recently to book a hotel, car hire and travel insurance, as like you we had a fair number but weren't spending them. We did have enough for a couple of flights to the US but there was no availability on the dates we needed to travel.

i know rgat the points needed for a decent hotel but as you say you are not using them. Problem is that I live in Harrotate and BA no longer fly out of Leeds/Bradford. There are no flights by anyone so this would mean going to Manchester by taxi often stay in a hotel and then would have to pay pretty high fees for this. Makes it seem just too much hastle. If I am flying to Europe the flight would be with Jet2.
Will have another look I am not travelling untul 20th November so ages yet!
Thanks again for all the advice on this excellennt forum

Thst would be great as at the moment BMI pulled out of Leeds also and now the only London flights are to Gatwick. Last time I flew out of Heathrow I went by taxi to and from Heathrow, Sharing with a friend cost us a bit but then we would have to get to Manchester by taxi or flight to Gatwick or by train to Kings Cross. It was worth going by taxi as it made the journey comfortable and it was a long haul flight.

    Thanks again
