How snowy and icy? How long is the commute on ungritted roads and for how many days is it snowy and icy? Is it really worth it? I'd suggest a new Kia Picanto. No road tax and it's fine on icy roads just not at high speed but is any car? And...it doesn't lose much value over time. How long do you think you would keep the car for? 7 years and it will effectively have no residual value. Costs £7,700 divided out over 7 years would be about £2 per day. Bargain...cheaper than a bus fare...it is to me anyway and it's quite economic to run at 55MPG (they claim more though but I get 55MPG or about 4 litres/100km at £1.39 a litre it's about 6p a mile) so if you wanted to give the government as little as possible then it would be a good choice and it also has a 7 year warranty so if anything major goes wrong then they'll fix it...however others will have better ideas.bushranger31 wrote: »Hi all, can anyone recommend a used car that can easily deal with snowy and icey roads with low uk road taxes ? Regular savers earn 6% interest (HSBC, First Direct, M&S)
Loans cost 2.9% per year (Nationwide) = FREE money.

Put winter tyres on, and most things are fairly decent.0

Agreed - I was running them on my old rear wheel drive transit a couple of years ago and I was going anywhere I wanted. People in this country over react and think you need to drive a hunvee all day everyday because it might rain.
You don't save money driving a 4x4.Yes it's overwhelming, but what else can we do?

What do you consider as low road tax? Are you looking at vehicles that are lower than 150 g/km and in the band F which is £135 a year? These vehicles are in this band:-
Skoda Octavia 1.6TDi 4 x 4
Kia Sportage 2.0TDi 4 x 4
Hyundai IX35 2.0 TDi 4 x 4
Volvo XC60 2.4 AWD
Range Rover Evoque diesel
Audi A4 estate 2.0 TDi quarto
BMW X1 Xdrive 18D and 20D
Nissan Qashqai 1.6DCi 4 x 4

As said, any reasonable car with the correct tyres, preferably in sensible sizes, not elastic bands stretched round 20" wheels.
Interestingly the old artics i drove with tubed tyres were on 20" wheels, i delivered many standard Insignias and XF's on 20" wheels...think idiocy light have taken hold.0 -
The best car I ever drove in the snow was a 1.4 Corsa B with skinny 175 section winter tyres. The man without a signature.0

The elastic bands on 20" wheels will work just fine as long as they are snow rated... even with just RWD
