Dilemma Help Needed

Hiya, my dad is moving house soon as he has inherited over £100000 from my great grandad so he is leaving and goin to blackpool with his wife, now I currently get the mull means tested grant and also student loan, however I am going to have to move in with my mom but her husband is on £22,000 a year and my mom has just recently accepted a new job which is £14,000 a year, the problem is though my moms husband is in at least £45,000's worth of debt so there not going to be able to help me out, but because of how much their earning I wont be able to get a means tested grant this year will I.
Could anyone help please.

  • Hi,
I'm not sure how the means tested system works, I didn't apply because my dad earnt over 30, 000. There might be a way of declaring your mum's husband's debt on the form. They should only take into account your main carer's income (which it sounds like is your mum and her husband).

Do you have an advice and welfare office in your student union? They have trained people who are really helpful with issues like this.

And if all else fails unis have a hardship grant you can apply for. they just take into account your finances for that, not your parents.

    lots of luck :D

If your dad has come into such a lot of money recently, surely he'll be able to help you out financially?
  • maybe my info was out of date

I'm not sure whether you can chop and change which parent's income you're assessed on. It's not just based on which parent you live with (in fact it specifically states that this isn't the case).

The information here states clearly that a step parent's income is part of the assessment. I'm afraid that FMOW is wrong.

Yeh but because of the debt he is in (my step-dad) he and my mom wont be able to support me, so is there no way to explain the situiation.

You're assessed on their incomings, not their outgoings, I'm afraid.

However, I still think that you'll be assessed on your father's income (I assume that this has to be the case up until now), the fact that you don't live with him doesn't matter. You're getting muddled by two different issues; who's the responsible parent and where you live.

This wont be helpful to you, but if my father had inherited that much money i would be damn sure to make sure i got some if i needed help for something as important as education.

Perhaps ask for an interest free loan from him?
  • they will take into account the income of the parent you live with AND their partner. Debts do not come into the calculation I'm afraid.
"Harry, I'm going to let you in on a little secret. Every day, once a day, give yourself a present. Don't plan it. Don't wait for it. Just let it happen. It could be a new shirt at the men's store, a catnap in your office chair, or two cups of good, hot black coffee."

Last year I was assesed from my dad and his partners income, but now its looks like im going to be assesed on my step dad and my moms income, I find it ignorant that they dont take debt into consideration because their is no way he or my mom can help me out, is there anyone who I can speak to and any other kind of money I can get to help.
