New york marathon (Flights?)

Options
Hey! I am a student and I have set myself the challenge of doing the 5 world marathon series :D

I was wondering, If there is a cheaper way to get flights to new york ? (below £400).

I was looking at something called avios (im new to this) ... and for signing up to a card i get 20,000 points which is a single to new york. However, what fees will i be charged for this? and is it even possible?

Thanks!!

ex-UK flight prices are dominated by fees, taxes and APD which total about £350. Hence the cheapest tickets are in the £450-£500 range.

You'd get a sub£400 flight if you use Avios, but it makes your 20k Avios worth about £100. Creditcard route makes sense, but realistically will you be approved as a student? Avios flight means its 100% flexible which is great if your plans change (cash equivalent is about £1500).

There's a return flight for £315 with US Airways to New York just before the marathon (STA Travel, student ticket, 2 Nov), departing Dublin. If you're not London based you might pick up Ryanair flights from your local airport to Dublin for the price you'd pay for a train to London.
