Your opinions on a very minor assault

I would report the assault to the police and bar the customer, especially if you do run a decent pub without a history of problems (and the chap wasn't falling down drunk because you've served him a lot more than you should have).
If you were innocent in the matter and handled it well (and that includes reporting it) then it won't get held against you/your licence and it can actually be used as an example to demonstrate how you handle difficult situations well. If you don't report it and the police hear about it from another source then the fact that you didn't report it is likely to damage your relationship with the police as they will think you hide things for them...this can lead to them putting your pub under a bit of a microscope.
Assaults on licencees and staff at pubs are generally taken seriously by police...there's been a national campaign by pubwatch lobbying for better responses from the police to this sort of incident and it has lead to an improvement in how cases are handled.
By not reporting it or barring him you really put your pub at risk....it gets around a community pretty quickly when something like this has happened and if you don't take action then your reputation will suffer and it will become way more likely that others will behave in a disorderly way on your premises (because they will think there is no consequence!).Common sense?...There's nothing common about sense!0 -

Many many years ago a group of young Glaswegians were invited into the office of the city centre pub they frequented sat down with a drink and shown a (relatively new tech for then) black and white video of them fighting in the pub with another group from the other side of the city.
They were then informed that a copy was with the lawyer of the owner and it would be apreciated if they took their custom elsewhere.
The other group were apparently given the same message on another occasion.
That was the day we discovered why a large city centre pub in the late 70s / early 80s could function with only 1 bouncer. The truth may be out there, but the lies are inside your head. Terry Pratchett

If he's a good customer and usually well behaved, then I'd just threaten to bar him should it happen again. If he's not then bar him straight away. It's hard to make a complete call on it until a bit more info is mentioned, like how drunk he was, if it was totally out of character or not, and if you or others had been winding him up.
No need to involve the police. He swang at you. He (almost) missed. I doubt they'd be interested, but it'd be worth telling him that should it happen again you'll be taking it further.0 -
