Community care Grants

  • Nonsense.

You appear to have missed the reference the OP made to previously getting a CCG for the washing machine and dryer.

DLA is for ongoing care/mobility needs such as paying for the costs of care and travel.

CCGs, by their very nature are for "one-off" or occasional needs.

The name came from the fact they were mainly intended to assist people settling into the community and to help someone stay in the community.

Disabilities of different sorts are the main reason why someone will have been in some sort of care or will be in care without the kind of thing a CCG will pay for....such as special equipment that helps them in the home, rather than going into care.

CCGs are also for needs arising where there are exceptional pressures for example - you or someone in your family suffers from a disability or chronic sickness which gives rise to an exceptional need

Generally, a disability greatly increases the need for and chances of getting a CCG. The very existence of DLA confirms the disability.

There are exceptions of course, but it's just not true to say people are expected to use their DLA to pay for household items.
Thank you for your kind responce, yes its not for a washer/dryer this time but for a microwave as i'm having real trouble using a hot oven and dropping item and buring myself, the money i have the £1800 i got a electric bed that rises and tilts etc so that money went on that i have not applied to date i was just wondering if i could get help with my partner living with me, i have a care plan in place and i have to pay £78.00 towards that care plan and all of my D.L.A goes on that so i dont see any of that money at all, i'm just hoping that it will not effect my partners stay in the country
thank you so much for your help:):)
  • OP, this is not about CCG, but another potential source of financial help which occurred to me when I read your post.

Have you checked if you are eligible for the Warm Home Discount with your electricity supplier? This is £130 off your bill, so worth having especially if you have above average fuel costs because of your health problems. The criteria vary from one supplier to another. See link for more info. http://www.decc.gov.uk/en/content/cms/funding/whds/whd_broader/whd_broader.aspx
Thank you so much i will look into this best wishes

cant your partner help with the cooking?

thats what DLA is paid for... help with personal care including cooking.
  • What about your partner getting some assistance from the CAB about their immigation status and possible benefits they do have specialist advisors in these areas.
It doesnt sound an ideal situation for you to be in really. If your supporting them then obviously you will not have enough money to buy yourself the things you need.

Do you know that you can buy a microwave for just over £30 from Argos?

In addition, will you need to buy in so much extra care when your girlfriend is living with you?

I can't answer the specific benefit queries in the post but I do recommend the OP signs up to their local freecycle/freegle/freeshare or similar site and looks out on Gumtree freebies.

I know it doesn't work for everyone but I live in a big city and there are regular free donations of furniture and electrical items, including dryers, microwaves and so on.

Also, check if you've got a local furniture charity as some will give their goods away for free or sell them cheaply to those on benefits, such as Emmaus.

The Turn2us website has a grant checker facility, plus you can ask on the Disability and Dosh board.

None of those seem to apply to the OP.

Seriously? I bolded those parts that may apply.

The OP is disabled. None of us knows how much that impacts on his life. He also appears to have a rather stressful immigration issue regarding his wife (see other posts).

Disability? The worry about whether his wife will be allowed to stay with him?

    Sounds exceptional to me.

Some people go into residential care because they can't manage at home. There might be equipment that helps them stay at home - rails, stair lifts, things for the cooker, those chairs that lift the person unable to raise themselves from the chair etc

not having a new washer/dryer doesnt mean you are in danger of not being able to remain in your home. it also isnt exceptional!

That rather depends on whether one's laundry needs are exceptional doesn't it? The OP has alluded to his needs being exceptional. That would account for him receiving a CCG previously from the department in possession of some important information.
if CCG were used for things like this, what would be the point of budgeting loans?
For things where the needs are not care related or exceptional.

I applied a a CCG for a washer/dryer and was awarded £550, I receive CB ESA, and the highest rate of both components of DLA, the mobility part goes on a car. I need a washing machine and dryer due to my disability and have no launderette near me, my old machine broke down beyond repair, so I guess it either differs from town to town or it's the luck of the draw as to wether the op will get one or not and the only way to see is to apply.
not all on benefits are scroungers and don't need to be bullied!

    Yes, seriously.

You bolded, "you need help to stay in your home and not go into residential care or hospital
you need help because you and your family face exceptional pressure, such as family breakdown or because one of you has a long-term illness"

There doesn't seem to be any question of going into residential care (unless you've read something I haven't) and a disability isn't the same as an illness.

His/her life is going to be very much easier when the girlfriend moves in and can provide care and support.
