And once you've had a PVR, you'd never want to go back to the very poor quality of videotape.

I can barely watch standard definition broadcasts, let alone VHS quality recordings!

Have been on the Family Pack since joining Sky which must be over 15 years now. The prices were frozen as you say but you do not mention that people like me on the Family pack had a price increase just prior to this and were then tied into the higher fixed price, the option to remove a couple of programmes from the pack and reduce the price by a couple of pounds was removed. The Family Pack is the only price increase this year, an existing customer like myself on the most basic pack with the most basic box (I still have the original standard box!) are basically subsidising the new customer deals and all those new shiny boxes they keep giving to everyone! Sky have offered me nothing over the years, when my original box broke they quoted me over £100 for a new standard one, more for a +box and extra for installation! Have thought about getting rid of it for a while and have now decided to cancel but am quite bewildered at the choice of freeview boxes and services available. If someone could point me in the right direction to find out the choices available to suit me, ie possibly top up tv so I can still access Eurosport/wrestling pogrammes, I'd be grateful.

If you phone up Sky, ask to cancel and go through to retentions, then a new box will be with you quicker than James Murdoch on his way out of the Leveson enquiry. Just say your existing one has failed and you can't afford a service call to fix it, sop you need to cancel.
Or a Sky+ boxes are available free on freegle or for peanuts on ebay
You have 3 basic options other than a Sky subscription service: Freeview, Freeeat or Freesat from Sky, there are numerous threads discussing the various pros and cons of each platform.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)

I agree. Long term customers of any company who just continue to pay without comment or complaint will always get a "raw" deal compared with those who threaten to leave and new customers who always have lots of offers to tempt them in.
