Following advice from tracey3596
I had a play with the iPhone 4S & Samsung Galaxy SIII (having ruled out the Lumia because of Skype comment). The Samsung was massive - far too big for me, in fact it felt more like holding my Kindle, and I found the iPhone quite intuitive - even though I'm not tech savvy.
Having resolved to wait for the new iPhone launch to trigger a fall in prices of older models, I got carried away today and bought a 'new unlocked iPhone 4S 16GB with 12 month Apple warranty' through eBay. Yes, I know, I might have been conned  but if I have, I'm in the company of 4 other buyers from the same seller today, so time will tell.
I wasn't impressed with the customer service (or rather lack of) at Tesco & Carphone Warehouse, so have decided to give Giffgaff a try. If that doesn't suit, I'll only be risking £10, and can move to another SIM only deal. I'll keep my old Sony Ericsson going in the meantime, just in case
Thanks again for all the advice0
