Presumably you can now buy a superior model for the same money.

(My guess is that the voucher could be an interpretation of the word "replacement".)

Surely 'a replacement' and 'an exchange' are exactly the same thing, aren't they?
What Jakg (?) said was a voucher = an exchange. Implying that the OP could choose a different item - something else the store sells - replacement is either another of the same item or a very similar one; giving a credit voucher to spend on any item in the store does not give the OP the opportunity to get a replacement tablet from another supplier if Curry's cannot source/offer/sell the OP one.
A credit voucher is not a remedy under SoGA.

True, but the alternative could be that they give the OP a refund in cash - minus the 11mths use they've already had, or a replacement of a used Advent tablet.

The Advent was a pretty poor tablet as it goes so personally I'd take the voucher and buy the new Asus Google Nexus 7 instead.

OP,did you buy the dock with the tablet?
could make it simpler to get the whole lot refunded/replaced

No, unfortunately that was bought elsewhere. We might try and sell it on E-bay.

What is the dock? Do you have a make/model number?

AFAIK, the Advent had a bespoke connection, and there were no docks available for that connection. Advent is a Dixons only brand (sold only by PC World and Currys), so you could not have bought a dock from elsewhere that worked only with that tablet.

If I am wrong on the bespoke connection front (I could be...), then the Vega had some sort of universal connection on it and any other tablet with the same connection will be able to use the dock.

How did the dock you bought connect to the tablet? Was there a cable connecting the tablet to the "dock"? Because no one other than Dixons would have manufactured a dock that the Vega would sit in like a cradle... So they would be able to refund it...

Actually there was a dock for that model only, had 3 USB and a HDMI out I believe.

The Dock and connection is just like the Apple 30 pin and the dock only fitted the vegas.

And it only took a 2 second google search to confirm it. http://www.dixons.co.uk/gbuk/advent-vega-1128-commercial.html

Fair enough! I guess my store just didn't stock ;)
But it must have been bought from Dixons - not "elsewhere" like the OP thought? Unless it was a 2nd hand job... So I imagine Currys would be willing to exchange the dock for one that fits the new tablet.

The connection wasn't exactly the Apple 30 pin though?! I remember having a hell of a time trying to find a cable to connect a Vega to our PC for a customer who hadn't brought theirs...
  • Okay -- have quizzed DH and apparently docking station (Advent Vega) was bought from PC World, so hopefully we will have a chance of exchange. An update on customer service: they did phone yesterday as promised, but only to say that they couldn't follow anything up until tomorrow, so we await another call... Thanks all for interest and help.

Good News! You should be able to push for at least an exchange on the dock (or refund in vouchers to the value paid) and the apps bought shouldn't be an issue if you get another android tablet! Hopefully that softens the blow a little :)
