As noted earlier, you need independent proof their assertion is wrong, as without this the matter has ended.0

The problem that exists with alleged water damage is that, apart from any change of colour on the sticker, users don't have any way of being reassured that this is what had caused the handset to fail. And, of course, the vendor assesses what has gone wrong and there is a suspicion that they have a vested interest.
Some faults reported on here have been blamed on water damage when it is blatantly obvious that this has nothing to do with it.
I agree that getting a 3rd party to inspect and fix the phone, then back-charging the vendor is the route to go, particularly with expensive handsets.
Buzby suggests getting a protected handset - probably something like the JCB sitemaster. Regrettably there are few - if any - touch screen smartphones that come under the category of protected.
The point about fir for purpose is relevant. Handsets will be carried in pockets and may be used outside in other than sunny weather, There should be some basic protection to ensure that everyday use does not allow water damage.0
