New way of getting charges from you

I bank with Yorkshire Bank and this week I went to check the account for my balance and saw a £35 charge but no reason was showing.
I phoned the telephone banking centre and was told that I had a PayPal payment which was declined and I was charged £35 for the privledge, but when I looked I could not see where the PayPal payment had been refused and was told it happened last month on ?? date, so I asked why it was not showing on the statement and their reply was, "with a declined payment it shows on the day it was refused and then it drops off the system and doesn't show on the statement any more" when challenged as to why I was told, well its the banks new way and that was it". and also that they don't take the charge that day they take it a month later..... why not the day it happened, not 1 month later when you can not remember that far back???/
This is so unfair because now it means you can get a charge for the declined payment but not know when or to whom the payment was declined, therefore meaning that you have to check your account every day.
I personally think this is totally out of order and will be complaining to the Banking ombudsman, because i think this is unfair practices by the Bank. They could stick charges on your account and unless you check the account every single day then you don't know what the charge is for.. and how do you know they are not just pulling a fast one.......

are you saying the payment was correctly declined because you didn't have money in the account or was it incorrectly declined?0

If they took the charge without notice I suspect you'd still be complaining. Is it a fee for card misuse?0

You will have had a letter sent the day the DD was returned to you, and the charge will have been notified to you both in this letter and in the charges summary section of your most recent statement. They used to issue all charges the same day they were accrued but under new FSA rules they have to be pre notified at least 14 days in advance.
Obviously you never read any correspondence the bank sends you!
You'll have to go through the banks internal complaints procedure before complaining to the ombudsman.
If its the first time it's happened, if you speak to your branch manager and ask nicely they may refund the charge as a one off goodwill gesture.Happiness can be found in even the darkest of places, if one only remembers to turn on the light - Albus Dumbledore

Why should the declined transaction show on the statement? It never took place, so there's no reason for it to show.
It would be unfair on the customer to take the charge on the day of the failed transaction. If you haven't got the money for the transaction on that day, then you may not have the money for the £35 charge.0 -
They give you notice of when they're going to collect the charge so that you can get your financial affairs in order.and also that they don't take the charge that day they take it a month later..... why not the day it happened, not 1 month later when you can not remember that far back???/
Not so that you can idiotically forget and generate new charges in future.0 -
With normal accounts (not basic accounts) I have a rule that if a bank declines a payment I close the account, whether they charge an unpaid item fee or not (and if they do I tell them to whistle for it).
I just don't have a use for a "service provider" that cares so little about the expense and inconvenience they might be causing me. I mean, what are they afraid of?"It will take, five, 10, 15 years to get back to where we need to be. But it's no longer the individual banks that are in the wrong, it's the banking industry as a whole." - Steven Cooper, head of personal and business banking at Barclays, talking to Martin Lewis0 -

So... you don't have the money for a payment, so they decline the payment. Therefore you punish the bank?

The charges are usually pre notified so you can make sure you have money in your account when they debit.

Given the amount I take it that it was DD. Not aware of any bank that charges for declined card payments.
So not only will yorkshire have sent you a letter/message advising you of the charge. You will also have had something from paypal advising they will be looking to claim the money for the purchase. Or even the retailer advising that they are not sending the goods as your payment failed.
You want a bank to charge you on the day that the event happened....
Now that would get the FSA/FOS's nickers in a twist.
Something along the lines of giving fair notice of charges is the words they useNever ASSUME anything its makes a>>> A55 of U & ME <<<0
