Should this hole be under my house?

This weekend i am focusing on DIY jobs and mice proofing the house as this has been a problem before.

One area my jack russel is always eager to get to is the cobbles by my drainpipe in the back garden.

Now I have taken out all the gravel/ cobbles and dug out some soil & this is what I found

Should this be here? Could this be where the mice are getting in? Should I fill it in?

I'm no expert but shouldn't the brick be flush to the foundations, or is the house on stilts? Looking at your photo it looks like the brick is sitting on a piece of wood, and if that's the case then surely that's not right?

Sorry I can't be of any expert help. Good Luck

    It looks like a Lintel.

The same as what you have over a doorway.

Put there to support the wall to allow the drain pipe to come to the outside.
I used to be indecisive but now I am not sure.

Yep it's a concrete lintel bridging the foul drain. Standard practice.
It should be set in pea gravel.
Fill it back with that and maybe set a piece of weldmesh over the area to stop the dog exposing it again ;);)
I like the thanks button, but ,please, an I agree button.

Will the grammar and spelling police respect I do make grammatical errors, and have carp spelling, no need to remind me.;)

Always expect the unexpected:eek:and then you won't be dissapointed
  • Hey the dog didn't expose it I did today. I think this is where the rats/mice are getting in so how could I prevent this?

  • Ps. There was no gravel so shall I get some to back fill with?

If you have mice or rat prob ...then put poison in the hole before backfilling.

Yes, and 1/2" x 1/2" weldmesh, will stop adult mice and any rats.

Expose the area further and ensure you cover the void completely.

Then fill with pea gravel as I said earlier.

Maybe a slab over the top if that's posible.

And as the previous poster said, trap or poison any vermin 1st or their only way out will be through your house and they will find a way :eek::eek:

edited to say I should have said ensure you fill the void behind the mesh 1st.

You have rats and a Jack Russell?

Stop feeding the dog so much, and make him work for his supper!
