  • Hello all
I'am so glad I'm not the only person having probs with theses people.
I also fell for the £1. charge which i was told would be donated to a charity. This happened back in December 12. Was charged £79.99 in December, then another £79.99 in May 13.
Contacted the company & told them Id never recieved anything from them ( which I haven't) yet been charged twice for what?????
I was told this was for a yearly subscriprtion to MGI ( Me group International). So I asked if yearly subscription why had I been charged twice. Told it was their mistake & I would get a refund. Which I must say I did get. I am however still awaiting the Original payment from December to be refunded & also a copy of the original telephone conversation that according to them has been quality controlled & I was defiantly told of the £79.99 charge, (which I wasn't told of). I'm not going to hold my breath....
I have also been in touch with BBC Watchdog so as many people as poss can be warned of this company/people.
    I will keep you updated.
  • I fell for this too. I have however recieved a refund. But the payment being taken after i cancelled has caused my account to go overdrawn and they are refusing to refund the charges. :( ive spoken to citizens advice and trying to sort from there. Although i dontvthink im going to get much luck. Might see if my bank will refund for me as it now appears it was a scam. I too recieved the crap magazine

Is this the scam which sends out vouchers and keeps a track of the ones you don't use to include more of the same in future mailings (reducing the 'useful' vouchers)?
  • I have only just joined this forum and I am concerned about what somecontributors have written regarding canceling a credit card after you havegiven details in order to stop recurring charges.
This is not as simple as it seems because unless you stop the agreement withthe company involved a stopped card or even a closed account can continue toreceive payment requests which are often paid by the bank thus building up anoften undetected debt and potentially affecting your credit rating.
This problem should not arise with reputable companies but the lessscrupulous and even downright scammers are hardly likely to cancel on requestare they, that is in the unlikely event that you can even get them on the phoneafter giving them your details.
There is split opinion as to whether or not banks can stop such arrangementsat your request. Many experts say they can but the banks invariably say theycannot and you are left as piggy in the middle.

    The morals here are;

    1. Always arrange regular payments by Direct Debit and if you are told youcannot do that then smell a VERY BIG RAT.
    2. Always contact the supplier and demand they stop calling for thepayments. (Often easier said than done).
    3. Always also tell your bank to stop the arrangement and be prepared forthem to bleat that they cannot do so and to insist you go back to the companyholding your details. (Please refer to "Vicious Circle" for an explanationof this process.)
    4. Never give your card details to any organisation you do not know andtrust completely.

These days it is easier to cancel a recurring payment with the bank, and if the bank refuses they have to pay out.

  • In THEORY this is correct, but believe me in practice it is not so. 90% of Banks are STILL saying they cannot do it and even if you ultimately achieve it the odds are that you are in for a lot of hassle.

I repeat, DO NOT SET UP RECURRING PAYMENTS ON A CREDIT CARD AND ESPECIALLY NEVER NEVER DO SO ON A DEBIT CARD!! If a company will not accept a direct debit arrangement say thanks but no thanks and move on.

For every link saying that it is now easier to get the banks to stop these charges I can show you dozens of real cases where they simply do not do it and they put up excuses that are hard to get around. I will say again the chances are the LEAST you will suffer is a great deal of hassle.

Unfortunately my background has brought me into contact with many who have suffered at the hands of these low life scammers.

Why do you think the scammers insist on a card and reject the Direct Debit option? They do it because they do not want you to have their own bank details and they know they will probably make a nice profit before you can stop them.
  • This scam is still going, and I fell for it this week. I am annoyed because apart from it costing £80 for my stupidity, my bank knew about the scam, and did nothing to help. When I gave my card number for the £1.00 "postage cost", again with no CVC number, the Bank's fraud department rang me to say this was suspect, and did I want to cancel the payment. I said that I definitely did want it cancelled, and would they reject all further demands for payment from this source. A few days later the payment went through, and the bank then said when I queried it that it would be disputed. Now the Dispute Department in India phoned to say it was my fault because I should have cancelled the subscription. As I had received no magazine, and did not even have a company name to contact, this was not possible. The bank is now washing its hands of it, as they say it is my fault. They have however cancelled the credit card, and sent me a new one, which is a small mercy. But I am aggrieved that the Banks appear to be colluding with fraudsters who they know about.
