Why overpay or underpay at all? Just get your DD set correctly.
If you think that giving your energy suplier a free loan is a good idea then maybe you are on the wrong forum? ;)

In the winter my bills will be higher. I don't really want to lower the direct debits right now incase they don't cover the bills. If our bills continue to be lower I will think seriously consider it. Since March this year i've managed to get 940 pounds repaid - believe it or not this is the first time i've ever been considerably in credit - we got our very cold house insulated last September so this has probably made a big difference - i've also been making an effort to use less electric.

Whenever i've swapped suppliers in the past they've always set the direct debits far too low to start off with - as low as 30 pounds each per month - and then they get hiked right up when it turns out it's not enough to cover the bills - this is why I don't want them lowered just yet.

But the whole point of a correctly set DD is that it should balance out. It's not a difficult calculation to do. Get your annual kWh figures, input into any comp site with your tariff and divide the resulting annual cost by 12 . At this time of year you should be in credit-but not by as much as you were.

    £220 per month ?
That is ridiculous - You obviously use an immersion heater for hot water - they are expensive to run but not £220 worth
I would expect perhaps half this amount
Are you sure that your neighbours are not nicking buckets of juice ?

Ours is about £200 / month , no immersion ,heating is controlled by thermostat , gas fire if we get chilly .

Five bedroom bungalow , and we like to be warm , and use lots of hot water , washing machine , tumble drier , dishwasher

I grew up in the 60's and 70's . no heating , ice on inside of windows in winter , limited hot water ........so as far as im concerned money well spent
Vuja De - the feeling you'll be here later
